the gospel music debate bothers me because it reveals something we don’t like to admit.

that a lot of what we call “christian standards for art” is really just respectability culture with a scripture reference attached.

the real gospel, the actual good news, doesn’t shrink your humanity, it enters it. it meets you in the heartbreak and the confusion and the political anger and the romantic longing.

so why would music made by someone carrying that gospel be limited to one emotional register?

david didn’t get that memo, neither did the sons of korah. neither did jeremiah who basically wrote the most devastating breakup letter to God in the history of recorded scripture.

the human experience is not a distraction from faith. for a believer, it is where faith actually lives.

and art that tells the truth about that is not less gospel. it might actually be more.

Fought in World Wąrs as soldiers only to return to America as boys, marched in Birmingham, hosed in Selma, jailed in Wilmington, assassinated in Memphis, segregated in the South, ghettoed in the North, ignored in history books, stereotyped in Hollywood...

and in spite of it all, someone in your family line endured every era to make sure you would get here, but you receive one rejection, face one obstacle, lose one friend, get overlooked, and you want to quit?
