Soil is expensive. When building new raised beds, place logs at the bottom to save money and improve water retention. It’s called “hugelkultur”. The logs act like water sponges ("water battery") during dry spells and they improve drainage.

Once a deer attacked me while doing this. I had no flashlight. I was looking up enjoying the stars while peeing in the dark, and I heard something charging at me, very rapidly and breathing loudly. I yelled at it, and stepped aside at the last second, still unsure of what it was. It was a deer.
