When I asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, on his way into the Pentagon, "Will you ask for a carve out for Afghans who worked with the US government?" (A reference to the President's Executive Order halting the US refugee program leaving thousands of Afghan allies who had already been vetted by the US govt stranded overseas.)
"We are going to make sure there is accountability for what happened in Afghanistan and we stand by our allies." A non-answer to whether he supports a waiver or carve out to President Trump's Executive Order halting the US refugee program. Many of the family members of US servicemembers and many Afghans who worked for the US government and face death threats from the Taliban don't fall under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program and humanitarian parole was the only way to get them to safety.

This segment of Haibatullah’s speech in Kandahar has been widely shared on Taliban social media platforms. In his address, Haibatullah reiterated his strong opposition to engagement with the international community. He declared that even if atomic weapons were used against him instead of the “Mother of All Bombs” (referring to the U.S. strike in Nangarhar’s Achin district against ISKP), he would not bow to external pressures. He emphasized his preference for death over yielding to international demands and condemned any attempts to interfere in his governance.

As I mentioned earlier, Haibatullah’s stance to declare a complete disconnection from the international community appears to be taking shape, and this speech could signify the first step in that direction.

This is a major development that will have an impact on daily life and traffic in Kabul. The giant walls around the US embassy not only cut off the Afghan capital, but was also a giant panopticon-like eyesore in the city.
