The Great Disappointment every Christian should read about.
In the early 1840s, an American preacher named William Miller convinced over a 100 thousand of followers that he had calculated the exact date of Christ's return using Bible prophecy. Farmers sold their land. Families gave away their savings. Businesses were shut down. On the appointed night in October 1844, thousands of believers climbed hills across the northeastern United States, dressed in white robes, and waited for the sky to open.
Morning came. Nothing happened.
History remembers it as The Great Disappointment. People who had spent years building farms and businesses woke up broke, landless, and humiliated, because they had outsourced their future to a date on someone else's calendar instead of their own hands.
Nigeria never had one Great Disappointment. It has one every single Sunday.
The difference is that nobody wakes up from it, because the men selling the wait have built themselves an exit the congregation doesn't know about or pretend not to know about.
Walk into almost any major Nigerian church and you will hear the same sermon dressed in different voices. Prayer is the answer. Don't rush. Don't force it. God's timing is not man's timing. Nigeria will be great one day, just keep believing. Meanwhile the pastor delivering that sermon holds a green card, sends his children to school in London or Houston, and owns property in a country where the lights never go off, the roads have no potholes, and institutions function without a single prayer chain. He has already built his own working system abroad. What he's selling you back home is patience and prayer.
That is the quiet scandal nobody wants to name out loud. The same men teaching an entire generation that Nigeria's dysfunction is a test of faith have personally opted out of waiting for that faith to pay off here. They know exactly what a functioning country looks like. They live in one, part-time or full-time, while telling you that building one yourself would be impatience, or worse, a lack of trust in God. Some say Nigeria was not called to build like China but to pray.
A Pew Research study of 110 countries found Nigerians pray more than almost any population on earth, second only to Afghanistan. Gallup puts the number saying religion is important in daily life at 96 percent. None of that devotion has produced power that stays on, or roads that don't kill, or hospitals that save. It has produced one of the most prayerful, least developed large economies in the world, led in large part by men who have already moved their own families to the places where prayer was never the infrastructure plan.
You are not being taught faith. You are being taught to stay still while someone else leaves.
And your faith is not the problem. The problem is how they sell it to you and how you practice it.
Gods plan for his children as recorded in the Bible is not for us to die praying in poverty and underdevelopment but to take dominion over the earth. To do that, you have to produce like China, execute like America, and think like the Japanese. Otherwise we will become another Afghanistan, rich in prayer, yet a disgrace to God in every other thing.
