Urgent Request for Permanent Action Against Repeated Toxic/Pungent Gas Emissions Affecting Residents of Pudupakkam and Siruseri
To,
The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu @CMOTamilnadu@TVKVijayHQ@DR_Vk_Rajeev @ @arunraajkg@Tnpcbofficial@supriyasahuias@BussyAnand@CTR_Nirmalkumar@chengachengg@AadhavArjuna
The Hon'ble Minister for Environment & Climate Change, Tamil Nadu
The District Collector, Chengalpattu District
The Chairman, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB)
And Other Concerned Authorities
Respected Sir/Madam,
We, the residents of Pudupakkam, Siruseri and surrounding localities in Chengalpattu District, would like to bring to your kind attention a serious environmental and public health issue that has been affecting our communities for several years.
A strong pungent-smelling gas is being released frequently, particularly during different hours of the day and night, from one of the nearby chemical manufacturing units. The foul smell spreads across residential areas, causing severe discomfort and health concerns among residents.
This issue is not new. During the past year, we have submitted multiple complaints to the Chengalpattu District Administration, TNPCB, and other concerned authorities. We have also personally met several officials and explained the gravity of the situation.
Based on the directions of the District Collector, TNPCB deployed an Air Quality Monitoring Vehicle and conducted extensive air quality assessments in Pudupakkam and Siruseri. Monitoring activities were carried out across various residential communities for more than 24 hours. However, the results reportedly indicated no abnormalities.
We strongly believe that the concerned industry was aware of the inspection schedule and temporarily stopped or reduced the emission of the suspected gas during the monitoring period. Unfortunately, soon after the monitoring exercise was completed, residents once again started experiencing the same pungent gas emissions.
The impact on public health has been significant. Many elderly residents, children, and young adults frequently suffer from breathing difficulties, throat irritation, eye irritation, headaches, nausea, allergies, and other respiratory-related issues. Several residents have been forced to seek medical treatment repeatedly, and there is growing concern regarding the long-term health effects of continuous exposure to these emissions.
The issue has also been highlighted through various media and press reports. Despite repeated complaints, field visits, inspections, and public representations, a permanent solution has not yet been achieved.
We therefore humbly request the Government and concerned authorities to:
Conduct surprise inspections and unannounced air quality monitoring during late-night and early-morning hours when the odor is frequently noticed.
Install continuous real-time air quality monitoring systems in affected residential areas.
Identify the exact source of the emissions through scientific investigation and forensic environmental analysis.
Review the operational records, emission logs, and compliance reports of nearby chemical industries.
Take stringent action against any industry found violating environmental norms and pollution control regulations.
Establish a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism for residents to report incidents immediately.
Ensure a permanent and sustainable solution to safeguard public health and the environment.
We respectfully urge your intervention in this matter. Clean air is a fundamental necessity, and the residents of Pudupakkam, Siruseri, and nearby communities deserve to live in a safe and healthy environment without fear of recurring toxic emissions.
We sincerely request your immediate attention and necessary action to resolve this long-pending issue permanently and help us breathe and live peacefully in our locality.
Thanking you.
Yours faithfully,
B. Karthi Raja
