Gadkari and Puri claim that ethanol blending is being done to reduce dependence on foreign oil and cut dollar outflow. However, the data suggests otherwise.

India doesn't produce enough ethanol to meet its own demand, while at the same time, ethanol blending in petrol has been made necessary, even though it reduces the fuel's energy content.

Due to which, India's ethanol imports hit a record high in 2025.

If we have to import both ethanol and crude oil anyway, then why not just import the fuel? Why use the argument of reducing dollar outflow when it is not?

Isn't it a way to create demand for ethanol and sell it at higher prices by blending it into petrol?
