Cannabis is by far the most widely cultivated, trafficked and abused illicit drug. Half of all drug seizures worldwide are cannabis seizures. In addition it impairs cognitive function, psychomotor performance, causes pulmonary diseases and impairs fetal development.
Drug addiction is one of the major public health threats and the leading preventable cause of death and disability worldwide. With its dependence becoming increasingly common, it is important one must learn ways to avoid an offer to drugs without risking their safety.
The fact that increasing number of youth is turning to Electronic Cigarettes is alarming. There is a misconception that E-Cigarettes are not harmful. However the constituents in it besides nicotine is found to have serious cardiovascular, neurological and pulmonary effects.
Alcohol abuse can cause severe health consequences in addition to behavioural changes. It leads to irreversible brain damage impacting learning and memory. Stroke, liver cancer and pancreatitis are also some health associated risk of long term alcohol abuse.
The adverse effects of cigarette smoke on human health are widely recognised. The constituents of cigarette smoke know as carcinogens are found to be extremely toxic and have led to the development of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
Another great session by Dr Hamza Bajwa marked the end of the basic research course. Dr. Hamza thoroughly explained the basics of systematic review and meta analysis, which was followed by an insightful discussion and question-answer session.
Drug addiction is a progressive disease. It alters the functioning of brain and long term substance abuse can be life threatening. According to recent reports, half a million people die globally due to drug addiction every year.

Drug abuse is a problem that is rooted deep in our community and needs great effort from the youth to counter it. A lot of work still needs to be done and we hope our core for the year 2022-23 will take over the work that has been done and create an even greater impact this year
The first year of S.A.N.D comes to an end and as the new core takes over, we would like to thank everyone in core of year 2021-22 for their untiring efforts to make the previous year a success and put S.A.N.D on the track of a great journey.
From the online campaigns to the work in field regarding awareness and research, everything went smoothly and we were able to create huge impact among our youngsters regarding substance abuse.
