Shocking Neglect of North Bengal by Mamata Banerjee Government!
On 24th October 2025, BJP MP Raju Bista wrote a letter to the Union Home Secretary seeking details on the allocation and utilisation of disaster relief funds by the West Bengal government. The response from the Ministry of Home Affairs has exposed gross mismanagement and blatant discrimination by the Mamata Banerjee-led administration against Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars.
The Union Home Secretary’s reply clearly states that disaster management and relief distribution are primarily the responsibility of the State Government. Yet, even after the devastating Teesta floods of 2023 and the recent landslides and floods in October 2025, no meaningful assistance was provided to the affected people of North Bengal.
What’s worse, as of 1st April 2025, ₹5,899.90 crore remains idle in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) — funds meant to alleviate the suffering of disaster victims! Despite the Central Government’s prompt release of ₹3,978 crore under SDRF and an additional ₹434.90 crore under NDRF, the State Government has done nothing for the people of North Bengal.
Where have these billions gone? Are they still sitting in government coffers, or have they been diverted for political gains? Is this yet another “Disaster Management Ghotala” under Mamata Banerjee’s watch?
This step-motherly treatment of North Bengal is both inhuman and unconstitutional. The State Disaster Management Minister, Javed Ahmed Khan, must be held accountable for this gross neglect and regional bias. A CAG audit of the SDRF utilisation is the need of the hour.
Mamata Banerjee cannot continue to run the state as if North Bengal doesn’t exist.
The people of the Hills, Terai and Dooars deserve dignity, relief, and fairness — not apathy.
