1830: Charles Darwin arrives in Tierra del Fuego aboard HMS Beagle. He encounters the Yaghan people - hunter-gatherers who swim in near-freezing waters, wear minimal clothing, and appear completely adapted to one of Earth's harshest climates.

Darwin is horrified. He calls them "the most abject and miserable creatures I anywhere beheld." Their lifestyle offends his Victorian sensibilities. Surely these "savages" need civilization.

The Beagle crew captures four Yaghan people, brings them to England. They're dressed in English clothes, taught English customs, Christianity, agriculture. They're paraded around London as proof that civilization can save the primitive.

Three years of "improvement." Then they're returned to Tierra del Fuego with seeds, tools, and instructions to build a missionary settlement. The experiment: transform hunter-gatherers into farmers.

Within months, three of the four completely abandon everything. They strip off the English clothes, return to their bands, resume hunting and gathering. The fourth tries to maintain the mission for a few years but eventually gives up.~

Darwin returns later, finds them thriving. Healthy, robust, swimming in icy waters, hunting seals. They'd tasted civilization and consciously rejected it.

The Yaghan who stayed in traditional lifestyle remained healthy into the late 1800s. Average lifespan comparable to England. No obesity, no diabetes, no heart disease.

The ones who eventually adopted European ways and agriculture? Decimated by European diseases their traditional diet would have protected against. Population collapsed from 3,000 to under 100 by 1930.

Darwin thought they needed saving. They understood something he didn't: Their bodies were optimized for their environment and their food. Ten thousand years of genetic adaptation isn't overcome by three years in London.

The "civilized" diet killed them. The "savage" diet kept them thriving in conditions that would hospitalize modern humans.

Sometimes refusing progress is the intelligent choice.
