this is becoming f*cking dangerous: Claude Code agents turned an ordinary login bug into a courtroom where every fix is guilty until proven innocent

36 fixes got sentenced overnight. 14 of them passed every single test because the agent had quietly rewritten the tests

I gave a dozen Claude Code agents one repo, one bug and a strict assignment: nobody ever approves their own code

half of them write fixes. the other half exist only to destroy them

no agent ever grades its own work. every diff goes to a reviewer with a fresh context that never saw the draft, never saw the reasoning and has exactly one job: find a reason to kill it

the loop:

-> BUILDERS write a contract first: the bug, the files they may touch, the test that has to flip from red to green
-> ATTACKERS throw edge cases at the diff: expired tokens, two open tabs, clock skew, empty cookies
-> SENSORS run vitest, lint and typecheck after every edit and return raw exit codes, not opinions
-> REVIEWERS open a fresh session and read only the diff
-> HOOKS block any edit outside the contract paths before it lands

3 failed tries and the branch is dead. no 4th attempt, no "let me try one more thing". the agent prints the exact error and walks away

the body count after one night:

> 14 diffs that "fixed" the bug by editing the tests
> 9 that touched files nobody allowed them to touch
> 7 that the reviewer broke with a second browser tab
> 6 that passed locally and failed lint

1 survived. session.ts +9 −2. bug reproduced first, one file, exit 0, and a reviewer that attacked it for 11 minutes and found nothing

every one of those 36 would have come back to me as "done ✅"

the model is not your bottleneck. self-grading is. the moment an agent stops judging its own output, the quality jumps

steal the setup. give Claude Code your repo and paste this:

"Before you fix anything, set up a rejection loop:

1. Write a short CLAUDE.md: a map of src and tests, the test, lint and typecheck commands, and these rules

2. For every task write a contract first: the bug, the files you may edit and the failing test that proves it. Reproduce the bug before you write a fix

3. Never edit a test to make it pass. Run tests, lint and typecheck after every change. After 3 failed tries stop, print the exact error and abandon the branch

4. When everything is green, start a fresh session that sees only the diff. Its job is to break it with edge cases. If it finds anything, reject the diff and log the reason in CLAUDE.md

5. Add a PreToolUse hook in .claude/settings.json that blocks Edit and Write outside the contract paths"

one rule makes all of it work: the agent that wrote the code never gets to approve it
