Navalys death is announced by the Federal Prison Service of Russia in a statement.
“On February 16, 2024, in prison colony number 3, prisoner Navalny AA felt bad after a walk, and almost immediately lost consciousness. Medical staff from the unit arrived immediately and an emergency team was called in,” reads the statement , which continues:
“All necessary resuscitation measures were performed, without positive results. Emergency doctors confirmed that the prisoner had died. The cause of death is being investigated.”
Nationalist profile
In the early 2000s, Alexei Navalny is a leading local profile for the social liberal opposition party Yabloko's Moscow district. In 2007, however, he was kicked out of the party, mainly because of his involvement in the "Russian March" - which is described in both Russian and Western media as a neo-Nazi phenomenon.
In the same year, he founded the nationalist movement Narod, which seeks cooperation with other Russian nationalist and neo-Nazi organizations. Narod becomes a short-lived story, and is closed down four years later. The movement does not work "organisationally", Navalny explains in an interview in 2011.
Navalny is becoming more and more famous these years for his fierce opposition to Vladimir Putin. Based on the nationalist platform, not least Russia's immigration policy is criticized. The nationalist profile believes that the regime is letting in far too many migrants unchecked, especially from the former Soviet republics in Central Asia.
In a radio interview from the same year that Narod was declared dead, Navalny described the Russian ruling party United Russia as "the party of crooks and thieves". The quote has great international impact, and is embraced by the Russian opposition.
For his fight against the rulers in the Kremlin, Navalny receives support not least from Sweden. The Löfven government promises hundreds of tax millions to help in the fight.
Imprisonment and death
From 2013 onwards, Alexei Navalny repeatedly comes into conflict with the Russian rule of law. In both 2013 and 2014, he was convicted of embezzlement of public funds from the Russian forestry company Kirovles. The penalty will be a suspended sentence both times. The EU and Amnesty International protest, and believe that the trials were not fair.
The anti-Putin Russian continues to arouse sympathy in the West as he is placed under house arrest for violating the travel restrictions imposed on him. In the summer of 2020, he is poisoned with the nerve agent novichok, but survives and is flown to Germany for treatment. Navalny blames Putin and the FSB security service.
Back in Russia, Navalny receives a suspended sentence converted to a prison sentence. At the same time, his nationalist past has caught up with him internationally, and Amnesty explains that the nationalist profile is no longer considered a "prisoner of conscience".
In an increasingly closed and authoritarian Russia, in August 2023 the harshest sentence will be handed down against Alexei Navalny: 19 years in prison for charges of extremism and attempts to "restore Nazi ideology".
In December, Navalny is moved to a prison camp in Yamalo-Nentsien in Siberia. He died there on Friday, aged 47.
Carl Bildt about the surreptitiously filmed meeting with NeoNazi Navalny.
Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has been put on trial and sentenced to prison since returning to Moscow. In Russian state media, he is described as a foreign puppet, based, among other things, on meetings with Sweden's former foreign minister Carl Bildt.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin denied at his annual press conference that the federal security service FSB had tried to poison Alexei Navalny, he did, however, admit a central fact: that the FSB is after all shadowing the opposition politician.
Not to assassinate him, Putin said, but to investigate the collusion with foreign powers that Navalny is repeatedly accused of by the Russian government and its state media.
- If they really wanted to, they would have ended him, Putin said .
Bildt: FSB "cursed"
One with personal experience of this is Sweden's former foreign minister Carl Bildt, who has featured several times in state Russian reporting on Navalny, even this year when the anti-corruption activist returned to Moscow.
When the two met in 2016, a previous meeting had just been filmed and broadcast on Russian television. This time they knew they were being filmed and changed meeting rooms at the last second to avoid the monitors, according to Bildt.
- Then they didn't find us and couldn't record the conversation, he says in the latest episode of SVT's Utrikesbyrån.
- The FSB were absolutely pissed off in any case and there was a long harangue on Russian television where they disliked this meeting.
Shifting image
Russian power has historically said very little about Alexei Navalny, and Putin does not mention him by name. But the dramatic news development surrounding Navalny has, according to many observers, made it impossible for the state media to remain silent.
The emphasis in the media description of him has then also shifted. From the state media's emphasis on Navalny as a right-wing extremist in favor of the image of a lackey for Western countries.
Navalny has a real history of being an outspoken nationalist and has been criticized for racist remarks. For state media, however, it has not been a very effective basis for criticism against him, according to Aleksandr Verchovskij of the anti-racist Russian Sova Center. That Navalny formerly belonged to the nationalist phalanx is a fact, but xenophobia is also widespread in Russia and many are not very supportive.
- It won't be very good propaganda, he says.
- It is much easier and more effective to say that he might be a German spy or something similar.
