I dag disputerer @SandnesMarie ved Institutt for Statsvitenskap. Avhandlingen har tittelen "Understanding power dynamics between intervening and host military forces: The case of the G5 Sahel Joint Force and external actors in the Sahel".
I argue that the relationship between the G5S-JF and external actors is best characterised as one of asymmetric interdependence and that this asymmetric interdependence can explain why the G5S-JF never developed into an autonomous force with ownership over its security responses.

As #Mali partners up with #Wagner, #Europe needs critical look at 10 years of failed #CounterTerrorism efforts and should start by understanding its own role in wars it participates in, how its policies are perceived, and what went wrong. @SigneCold@EUobs https://t.co/p4SPPF4vo5
🚨New Report 🚨 A short 🧵.
A few months ago, my colleague @SandnesMarie and I started a project on rising powers’ engagement in the #Sahel and #Afghanistan. The project was funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (@NorwayMFA) and hosted at @PRIOresearch. 1/

Everyone looks at ACLED data on violence, but school closures are probably a reasonable proxy for the exercise of state authority. On the left is Burkina Faso in November 2021, on the right is October 2022. This is catastrophic.
Outrageous stuff, and this move continues to undermine one of the key roles of MINUSMA, which is reporting on and investigating human rights abuses. But I’ll be surprised if the mission does anything about it.
