Chief Nwafor was a wealthy palm-oil dealer from a neighbouring town.
He was fifty-two, widowed and respected in the community.
He had been courting Nneka for almost a year.
Unlike the other men who had approached her, he wasn't intimidated by Obinna.
HIS MOTHER, HIS OBSESSION
Story By Awele Sandra
The first time Obinna heard his mother say she was getting married, he was twenty-four years old.
He was sitting outside their family house in Agwa village in the southern part of Nigeria, repairing the chain of his motorcycle
One afternoon, Chief Nwafor arrived at their house with a basket of food.
Obinna saw him from a distance.
He walked toward them.
"Good afternoon, Mama."
Nneka smiled.
"Good afternoon, Chief."
Chief Nwafor handed her the basket.
"I brought some things from the village."
You are destroying my happiness."
Those words stayed with him.
That night, he couldn't sleep.
He walked around the compound until midnight.
Then he entered his mother's room.
She was asleep.
Nneka shouted his name.
"Obinna!"
But he continued.
"She doesn't need you."
Chief Nwafor stared at him for a long moment.
Then he turned to Nneka.
"Your son needs help."
He walked away.
Nneka was furious.
"What have you done?"
"I was protecting you."
"No, Obinna
Obinna took the basket from his
mother's hand and dropped it on the ground.
The bottle of palm wine inside broke.
Silence filled the compound.
Chief Nwafor looked at him.
"Young man, what is wrong with you?"
Obinna stepped forward.
"You should leave my mother alone."

You don't like any man who comes near me."
Obinna looked away.
"Maybe because they all want something from you."
His mother became silent.
Then she asked softly,
"What do you want from me?"
Obinna had no answer.

HIS MOTHER, HIS OBSESSION

The first time Obinna heard his mother say she was getting married, he was twenty-four years old.
He was sitting outside their family house in Agwa village in the southern part of Nigeria, repairing the chain of his motorcycle
"You don't need another husband," he told her.
Nneka looked at him sadly.
"Obinna, I am your mother."
"I know."
"Then why are you behaving like this?"
"Because I don't trust him."
"You have never even spoken to him properly."
I don't like him."
Whenever she praised another man, something burned inside him.
Whenever a man visited their house, Obinna became cold.
When his mother laughed at another man's jokes, he would leave the room.
And when she began talking about marriage, his jealousy became impossible to hide.
When she became sick, he slept beside her bed.
As he grew older, something changed.
Obinna no longer wanted his mother merely to love him as her son.
He wanted to be the most important man in her life.
He did not understand it himself.
After his father's death, Obinna became his mother's companion.
He followed her everywhere.
When she went to the market, he went with her.
When she attended church meetings, he waited outside for her.
For years, his mother, Nneka, had been the most important person in his life.
His father had died when Obinna was nine.
He remembered very little about the man except his deep voice, his walking stick and the smell of his old brown shirt.
Who?"
"Chief Nwafor."
Obinna stood up immediately.
"No."
His mother frowned.
"What do you mean, no?"
"I mean you cannot marry him."
She looked at him carefully.
"And who gave you the right to decide that?"
Obinna said nothing.
when his mother walked out of the kitchen.
"Obinna, I have something to tell you."
He looked up.
"What is it, Mama?"
She sat beside him.
"I have decided to marry Chief Nwafor."
The chain fell from Obinna's hand.
For a few seconds, he stared at her.
"Marry?"
"Yes."
