Her name was Neerja Bhanot.

Born in Chandigarh in 1963. She grew up in Mumbai, modelled for advertisements, and in 1985 joined Pan Am as a flight attendant. She was 23 years old.

Once her mother told her that if there was ever a hijack she should run and save herself.

Neerja replied. Mummy, mar jayungi lekin bhagungi nahin. I would rather die than run away.

On September 5 1986 she was the Senior Purser on Pan Am Flight 73 flying from Mumbai to New York via Karachi. The plane was carrying 380 passengers and 13 crew members.

At 6am during the Karachi stopover four armed terrorists boarded the plane dressed as airport security.

Neerja spotted them immediately and whispered the hijack code into the intercom. The three pilots escaped through an overhead hatch and fled. The plane was grounded. The terrorists could not fly it anywhere.

The enraged hijackers put Neerja in charge of communicating with the airline. All other flight attendants were tied up with ropes. She was alone.

For 17 hours she kept 380 people calm. She served them sandwiches and water. She spoke to them. She managed the terrorists.

When the hijackers ordered her to collect all passports she sensed they were targeting Americans. She and her crew quietly hid the American passports under seats and threw the rest down a rubbish chute. 42 of the 44 Americans on board survived.

After 17 hours the terrorists opened fire and threw grenades into the cabin.

Neerja opened an emergency exit door. She could have been the first one out. She stepped aside and began pushing passengers through.

The terrorists saw her helping three unaccompanied children escape. They caught her by her hair and shot her at point blank range.

She died on the tarmac in Karachi. Two days before her 24th birthday.

She was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra. The first woman and youngest person ever to receive it. India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

Pakistan awarded her the Tamgha-e-Pakistan. The United States Department of Justice gave her the Special Courage Award.

Her name was Neerja Bhanot.

She had every chance to save herself.

She chose not to.

Her name is Rohini Sindhuri.

She is a 2009 batch IAS officer posted in Karnataka.

In 2018, she was the District Collector of Hassan. She discovered illegal sand mining happening every night from the rivers in her district. She stopped it.

Local politicians were furious. They went to the Chief Minister.

Within days, she was transferred out of Hassan.

She fought it in the Karnataka High Court. The court ruled her transfer was illegal and ordered the government to reinstate her.

The government reinstated her.

Then transferred her again.

She went back to court. She kept going back to court every single time the system tried to silence her.

Between 2018 and 2023, she was transferred seven times. Each transfer came within weeks of her exposing something.

She never stopped working. She never stopped filing cases. She never stopped showing up.

India has a system where honesty is punished with transfers. Rohini Sindhuri refused to accept that as her final answer.

She is still in service today.

An Open letter to Indian Media and @MEA

Dear Indian media,
If you can grill India non‑stop on the Vikas Yadav–Pannun case, you can also question the US on what its own citizens are doing near our borders.
This selective courage is exactly why trust is collapsing.
NIA has arrested 7 foreign nationals – 6 Ukrainians and 1 American – who allegedly came to India on valid visas, went to Mizoram, slipped into Myanmar, and sourced drones from Europe for “suspicious activities.”
How is this not a prime‑time story?
Western volunteers – including Americans and British – are openly training and fighting alongside anti‑coup forces in Myanmar.
One American fighter is even planning teams of ex-soldiers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to “train” rebels.
And our media has… moved on?

All this is happening right next to India’s northeast.
Myanmar’s instability is not abstract for us – it means:more refugee inflow more arms and drug routes more tensions in Manipur and Mizoram
This is India’s security, not a distant foreign story.
The US lectures the world on “counter‑terrorism” and “rule of law” while its own citizens join armed groups in conflict zones – from Syria to Ukraine to now Myanmar.
Is it not fair to ask:
What oversight does Washington have on its citizens fighting abroad?
So why aren’t Indian journalists asking, on record, at US briefings:Are American citizens involved in training rebels in Myanmar?What steps is the US taking to stop this?How does this square with its global anti‑terror posture?
These are basic, legitimate questions.

This is not about being “anti‑US.”
This is about being pro‑journalism and pro‑India.

If Indian media can amplify every allegation against India, it should also show spine when foreign nationals from powerful countries are linked to conflicts that hit our own borders.
Dear editors and anchors:
Don’t just debate “Indian agencies under global scrutiny.”
Also ask:

Why are American and other Western citizens showing up in Myanmar’s war – and what does that mean for India?
Same standards. Same courage. That’s all.

If you agree, don’t just scroll.
Reply, quote, tag your favourite channels, anchors and reporters.
Force these questions into the news cycle.
