Our Senior Leadership Team learned some new skills, recently. They joined a heat pump class, a welding class, a bakery class in the kitchen at Westerly Restaurant in Ayr and took a visit to Dam Park for a forest kindergarten session with local families.

Mothers know their babies’ voices.

But did you know that your baby knew yours even before they entered the world?

In a landmark study from Canada, fetuses between 33-35 weeks of gestation were exposed to one of two recordings: one of their mother reading a passage and the other a recording of a stranger reading the same thing.

Researchers found that the children exposed to their own mothers’ voices experienced an increase in fetal heart rate of 5 beats per minute (an expression of their keen interest).

Children exposed to the voice of a stranger experienced just the opposite - a decrease of roughly 4 beats per minute.

After birth, another study showed that newborns not only recognize their mother’s voices, but in an experimental setting even learned to adjust their rate of sucking on a special electronic pacifier to activate a recording of their mothers’ voices.

Still more evidence that learning begins in utero!
