OGUN EXCO APPROVES MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS, CHIEFTAINCY UPGRADES

…Okays Assembly Quarters, 450 Housing Units, Strategic Roads, Governor’s Lodge Reconstruction

The Ogun State Executive Council has approved a fresh set of strategic infrastructure projects, including the construction of new legislative quarters, housing schemes, the reconstruction of the Ogun State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, the rehabilitation of major roads across the state, and the upgrading and recognition of traditional stools as part of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to sustainable development, urban regeneration and the preservation of the state’s cultural heritage.

The approvals include the construction of 450 units of two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows with basic infrastructure facilities, the development of 28 new official quarters for members of the Ogun State House of Assembly, the construction of 28 sellable duplexes at Ibara Government Reservation Area (GRA) Scheme II, as well as the reconstruction of the Ogun State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The Executive Council also approved the reconstruction of several strategic roads across the three senatorial districts to improve connectivity, facilitate economic activities and enhance the quality of life of residents.

The road projects approved are the reconstruction of the Okun-Owa–Ijebu-Ode Road in Odogbolu and Ijebu-Ode Local Government Areas; the Ago-Iwoye–Ijebu-Igbo–Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic Road in Ijebu North Local Government Area, covering 19.05 kilometres with carriageway widths ranging from 5.5 metres to 14 metres; Phase One of the Odeda-Olugbo Road in Odeda Local Government Area, spanning 5.5 kilometres with an average width of 8 metres; the Ayobo (Mopol Junction)–Lafenwa Junction Road in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, measuring 3.6 kilometres with a width of 10 metres; and the Agbala Road in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, covering 2.78 kilometres with a width of 8 metres.

In further demonstration of its commitment to strengthening traditional institutions, the Council approved the upgrading and appointment of the Akoko of Tongeji Island into a recognised chieftaincy, the declaration of the Onitafin of Orile Itafin as a recognised chieftaincy, and the appointment of the Olu of Orile Itori-Odo into a recognised chieftaincy.

The Council also approved the creation and upgrading of certain coronet stools under the Ijebu, Egba and Yewa Traditional Councils, in line with established procedures for the recognition and continued development of traditional institutions in Ogun State.

Announcing the decisions in a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, said the approvals reflect the administration’s resolve to sustain the massive infrastructural transformation and institutional reforms that have become the hallmark of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s government.

According to Akinmade, the reconstruction of the House of Assembly quarters and the Governor’s Lodge is aimed at providing a conducive environment for governance, preserving valuable government assets and ensuring a seamless transition for future administrations.

He noted that the approvals align with the administration’s policy of replacing obsolete public infrastructure with modern, functional and durable facilities capable of meeting the state’s growing needs.

Akinmade recalled that several government buildings inherited by the present administration were more than 50 years old, structurally distressed and had deteriorated beyond economical rehabilitation. Their reconstruction, he said, forms part of the government’s broader urban regeneration programme, which has already transformed numerous ageing and derelict public structures into modern facilities across the state.

Ogun Government Absorbs Over 300 OgunTEACh Interns into Permanent Teaching Service

The Ogun State Government has offered permanent appointments to more than 300 teachers who successfully completed their two-year internship under the Ogun Teach Experience Acquisition Channel (OgunTEACh) programme. The symbolic presentation of appointment letters, held at the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), reflects the administration’s continued commitment to strengthening the education sector and improving the quality of teaching in public primary schools across the state.

Speaking at the event, SUBEB Chairman, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, described the exercise as the fulfillment of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s promise to successful participants of the programme. He commended the beneficiaries for their dedication and resilience during the internship period and urged them to see their appointments as a call to greater professionalism, innovation, and commitment to shaping the future of learners across Ogun State.

Also speaking, Permanent Member IV of SUBEB, Rt. Hon. Akeem Balogun, noted that the OgunTEACh initiative has provided employment opportunities for over 5,000 teachers statewide, while the Coordinating Director of SUBEB, Mr. Femi Fatade, encouraged the newly employed teachers to pursue continuous professional development. The beneficiaries, who expressed appreciation to the state government, pledged to contribute their quota towards advancing quality basic education and improving learning outcomes in schools across the state.

Relief for Retirees as Ogun Approves Additional Pension Benefit

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of workers and retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) with the approval of an Additional Pension Benefit (APB) aimed at enhancing retirement security and closing existing gaps in the scheme.

The development was disclosed during a meeting chaired by the Honourable Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, following strategic engagements between the State Government, labour unions, Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs), and members of the Pension Fund Management Committees.

Speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner emphasised that compliance with the CPS law is both mandatory and beneficial to employees and the State. He explained that the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and the CPS are fundamentally different, stressing that the administration of Dapo Abiodun remains committed to addressing identified gaps in order to safeguard workers’ interests.

He disclosed that the Governor had approved the introduction of the Additional Pension Benefit in line with existing laws. While gratuity was a feature of the DBS, he noted that the APB under the CPS is structured in a similar spirit but differs in computation. According to him, the benefit will be calculated using defined service-year brackets and applicable scale rates, which are generally more favourable to most retiring workers.

Mr. Okubadejo described the APB as the first of its kind in Nigeria, specifically designed to make the CPS more attractive and to ease fears surrounding retirement security. He said the initiative reflects Government’s proactive approach to pension administration and confidence-building among public servants.

He further explained that the APB would run for ten years as a compensatory measure for retirees whose accrued pension obligations were not promptly remitted by previous administrations, depriving them of potential investment returns. The benefit, he said, is intended to cushion the effects of those lapses and provide equitable financial relief.

On sustainability, the Commissioner noted that large lump-sum withdrawals often reduce monthly pension income. As a result, the Government plans to seek approval from the National Pension Commission to preserve pension contributions primarily for monthly payments, while the APB would serve as a one-off retirement benefit, effective from July 2025.

He urged relevant Ministries, PFAs and labour unions to strengthen service delivery, intensify public sensitisation and organise regular pre-retirement training programmes at least six months before workers leave service.

Earlier, Permanent Secretaries from the Bureau of State and Local Government Pensions, Mrs. Arinola Adetayo and Engr. Olufisan Osiyale, said the engagements were aimed at improving collaboration, resolving emerging challenges and ensuring smooth access to retirement benefits.

They described the CPS as a partnership among the employer, employee and PFAs, stressing that strong synergy remains essential for the success of the scheme.

Responding on behalf of labour unions, leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria — Mr. Ademola Benco and Mr. Akeem Lasisi — commended the Governor for what they described as a bold and worker-friendly reform.

They noted that concerns over the adequacy of monthly pensions under the CPS had persisted for years but expressed satisfaction that the APB effectively addresses those challenges.

Describing the initiative as innovative and unprecedented, the labour leaders pledged full support for the new retirement benefit structure, saying it reflects the administration’s strong commitment to workers’ welfare, dignity and long-term financial security in Ogun State.
