Official Statement on the U.S.-Ukraine Summit and the Ongoing Conflict
On February 28, 2025, a meeting took place at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with Vice President J.D. Vance also in attendance. The meeting was marked by intense exchanges between the leaders, leading to a breakdown in discussions and the cancellation of the planned signing of an agreement on mineral resources.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to have profound implications for the international community. In this context, our party strongly calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution. The continuation of warfare not only results in significant loss of life and threatens regional stability but also escalates global tensions. Notably, concerns regarding the potential escalation into a third world war cannot be ignored.
The roots of this conflict are complex, involving issues such as the situation of ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine and the eastward expansion of NATO. It is crucial to approach these factors comprehensively and seek solutions from an impartial standpoint, rather than resorting to unilateral blame. Our party supports President Trump’s demonstration of strong leadership in acting as a peacemaker between Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, as a nation committed to peace, Japan should pursue a neutral and constructive diplomatic approach, promoting dialogue among the relevant parties and working in coordination with the international community to achieve a peaceful resolution.
Ukraine has historically relied on foreign support for its security. However, changes in U.S. administrations and shifts in the international landscape have destabilized this foundation, placing Ukraine in a challenging position. Japan must take this lesson seriously and work to enhance its deterrence capabilities while also expanding multilateral cooperation and strategic diplomatic options. Japan must not depend solely on other nations for its defense and security; instead, it must take the initiative in formulating an independent and strategic approach to safeguard its national interests.
