Laapataa Ladies – The riveting 6 mins of sheer happiness where Ravi Kishan transforms from a typical Police Inspector into a hero!

A 6-minute video from the movie ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been viewed close to 10 million times. In just 4 months! Every second of this 6.43-minute performance looks sculpted. There seems to be nothing that can be done to improve the scene. Of course, Ravi Kishen, as the Police Inspector, has outclassed everybody in this scene; a scene where everyone has given their best.

Beyond acting, this scene is interesting and riveting for what it conveys: the pitfalls in labelling people as good and bad, and why it’s wrong to jump to conclusions while judging people. The scene also describes how the human mind can change in a transformative way in split seconds.

The scene opens with the police Inspector Manohar (Ravi Kishan @ravikishann ) accepting bribes to help Pradeep Singh (Bhaskar Jha), the husband of the ‘missing wife’, in the custody of the Police. Like a typical police inspector in India, Manohar checks the bunch of notes, stores them, and then calls his constable, Bela, to bring his wife, Jaya (Pratibha Ranta @PratibhaRanta ).

Seeing his wife, the already angry Pradeep Singh loses his temper and slaps Jaya hard on her face. The camera shows that both Jaya and the lady constable look at Inspector Manohar, hoping that he will stop the angry husband. The camera moves to Inspector Manohar. It is this minute that Ravi Kishan, who played the role of Inspector Manohar, shows his maturity in acting. He expresses his uneasiness and guilt in his eyes for a second, and then he looks down, unable to face the look of Jaya.

Thus, in the next minute, when the husband asks Jaya for the jewellery (Gehana Kidar hain?), the answer comes as a cold and grave voice of the Inspector, ‘Gehna Idhar hain’. It is this stern voice that conveys the change in the mind of the Inspector.

What influenced this change that happens in a second? The abuse of the husband? Or his threat to the wife? Or his indirect insult to the Police station? It could be anything. But the decision is cast. Inspector Manohar has decided to help Jaya.

The next few minutes are pure acting prowess of Ravi Kishan! How he gets up from his chair with determination, how he offers his kerchief to the lady, and how he menacingly talks to the husband (This is called Law!), and makes the husband realise that he has no other option but to leave the lady. Ravi Kishan delivers it to perfection. It does not end here. After ensuring that the husband is sorted out, he gives the jewellery back to Jaya and wishes her the best. His eyes do all the acting.

Outstanding performance by Ravi Kishan. I don’t think anybody else could have done better than this. Even the other characters, Constable Dubey, Lady Constable Bela, and Jaya, the wife, have acted so well. As I said, the entire scene is sculpted. Not even one second can be added or removed. I guess this scene will be played multiple times in classrooms that teach acting and direction. The director, Ms Kiran Rao, deserves all the appreciation!

While the scene leaves us with satisfaction and happiness, do we judge the Inspector as good or bad? He doesn’t even return the bribe to the Husband. But still the inspector is hailed as a hero by the audience, who decided him as a villain a few minutes ago!

The perils of judging people and dividing them as good or bad! I can’t help but remember Dale Carnegie, who paraphrased the words of Dr Johnson: "God himself, sir, does not propose to judge man until the end of his days. Why should you and I?"

Link between Kempe Gowda and the Hoysala Queen Shantala. Hosadeva vokkaliga jain linkage. Hosadeva vokkaliga were once jains who then convert to Hinduism and hence a new god "Hosa Devaru".

Doddaballapura was named after Dodda ballala (elder brother of Vishnuvardhana), Chikkaballapura was named after Chikkaballala( son of Vishnuvardhana) and Devanahalli is named after Devarasegowda.

According to historian Ha Ka Rajegowda, Kempegowda ancestors origin is traced from Hoysalas. He rejects the theory of migration of Kempegowda ancestors.

Yelhakka( Yelhanka) feudatory do existed even before Vijayanagara empire. It was also feudatory under hoysala empire.

Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana and queen Shanthala Devi had two children, Chikkaballala and Hariyala Devi. Hariyala Devi was married to son of Sindhagere Mariyanna, Bharatha dhandanayaka. There was internal conflict among the children of Vishnuvardhana over succession of throne. Chikkaballala was murdered by his political opponents. Shanthala Devi suffered by pain due to her son murder and moved to Kuruvugere near Shivagange. Subsequently Bharatha Dhandanayaka was also murdered by political opponents of Chikka ballala. Finally Shanthala Devi committed suicide in Shivagange.

Hariyala Devi didn’t had children .But, she didn't loose her hope. She took the administration to her hands, adopted her younger brother in law Devarasegowda. Devarasegowda is believed to be ancestor of Kempegowda.
