Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

Pillay chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, from 2021 to 2025.

In a landmark 2025 report, the commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.

In May 1948, Egypt caught two Israeli soldiers near the wells of Gaza and accused Israel of trying to poison its water. At the UN, Israel's representative called the charge medieval anti-Semitic incitement. Israel called it a "wicked libel."

In 2022, the Israeli historians Benny Morris and Benjamin Z. Kedar published the IDF's own documents. The operation was real. It had a code name: Cast Thy Bread.

I served in Israel's Foreign Ministry and was an analyst in Unit 8200. I never heard of this operation until Haaretz published the files. This video walks through what they show: Ben-Gurion's diary, Yigael Yadin's orders, the wells near Jerusalem, the typhoid outbreak in Acre, the Gaza mission, the denial at the UN Security Council, and the officers who objected.

Israel has never acknowledged Cast Thy Bread. It has never taken back the words "wicked libel."

Israeli occupation forces have begun ripping up the main water lines in Anata, northeast of occupied Jerusalem.

Not a checkpoint. Not a raid that ends at dawn. The pipes that keep a town and the Shuafat refugee camp alive.

While families are locked under curfew, while every entrance is sealed, while soldiers break into homes and shops and turn living rooms into interrogation rooms, the bulldozers go after water. Children, elders, the sick — cut off from a basic human need under military protection.

This is what collective punishment looks like in occupied East Jerusalem. Isolate the community. Humiliate it. Then starve it of the one thing no one can live without.

Anata and Shuafat are not “security zones.” They are Palestinian neighbourhoods and a refugee camp that have already been walled in, restricted, and squeezed for years. Destroying civilian water infrastructure is not an accident of war. It is policy.

Water is not a privilege the occupier gets to revoke. It is a right.
