We’re usually focused on what’s shipping next quarter, but it’s important to occasionally remind ourselves why we’re building a base layer fast enough to serve as a real-time source of truth for rollups.
Here's how @benafisch described our vision at an event we hosted last night in Seoul ahead of @kbwofficial:
Espresso Network is the most ambitious project in Web3 right now.
Our mission is to fulfill the original vision of Web3: A unified, interoperable web of digital assets, where money can move anywhere as fast as information travels. Where all platforms are interconnected. A world of unified liquidity for trading and seamless interoperability for payments.
Today digital finance is still fragmented across many isolated platforms. Trading and payments happen in closed systems. This is not only costly, it limits freedom and innovation.
Blockchains promised to solve this, but they haven’t yet. Why? We discovered no single blockchain was scalable enough to host all the world’s assets and applications. Instead, we ended up with many independent chains. This accelerated in the last few years.
The Layer-2 paradigm shift made it simple to bring any asset and any financial platform onchain, but today the world of onchain digital assets and platforms replicates the same fragmentation of Web2. As a result, the majority of trading happens in centralized exchanges that custody assets across different chains. And it’s costly to move assets from one chain to another.
The missing piece is a network through which all chains can communicate with one another in real-time. This is what Espresso provides—first for crypto-native finance, and soon for the broader world as more of the global economy comes onchain.
Espresso acts as a real-time source of truth. Orders placed on any Espresso-connected chain can be matched and settled against orders from any other, dissolving today’s liquidity silos and redistributing market power. Payments on one chain can be synchronized with actions on another.
Espresso is decentralized consensus protocol (a so-called Layer-1) that supports Layer-2 chains, also called “rollups,” on top. Unlike Ethereum, it is specifically designed for rollups, rather than supporting them only as an afterthought. It delivers the essential services that rollups need—data availability and order consistency—without burdening itself with any smart contract logic.
Through this architecture, it is scalable enough to secure the entire internet of value and it is able to finalize transactions up to 1,000 times faster than Ethereum. Combined with real-time zero-knowledge proofs or secure hardware, Espresso enables real-time communication across all its connected chains.
Every platform hosting digital assets or payments is incentivized to join Espresso to access deeper liquidity and universal interoperability. By anchoring the strongest network effect, Espresso is poised to capture durable value for its community of operators.
True to its namesake, the most famous beverage in the world, Espresso brings communities together. Espresso will unify the world of digital finance and realize the ultimate vision of Web3.

tired of AI slop on profiles? same tbh
most of these were caused by daily tasks and low score users thinking they MUST review people
so we've removed reviews from daily tasks
long humanity (more on this soon)
Where in the world is Espresso?
While @charleslu1 is speaking at ETHTokyo today, another of our co-founders, @benediktbuenz, is at the TUM Blockchain Conference in Munich to speak about Espresso, why fast finality matters, and why it's the gateway to crosschain composability.
We're in Taiwan for Taipei Blockchain Week.
On Thurs, @charleslu1 will give a technical talk on Espresso: "Fixing Rollup Security & Interop in a Single Stroke"
Join him for insights on how Espresso's rollup-native base layer is powering the next generation of crosschain apps.
Our friends at Informal did a deep dive on HotStuff consensus so you don't have to.
Read their latest blog to understand more about Espresso's design and advantages. ☕️
