The name Abdul: since I arrived in the US in 1983, I always squirmed and bristled when someone incorrectly addressed me as Abdul. Abdul is a shorthand for Americans who don’t want to bother to learn how to pronounce an Arabic name. And some Arabs use it to make it easier for Americans, because no one is called Abdul in Arabic. It is usually Abdul followed by one of the 99 names of God in the Qur’an. When I was a graduate student in DC, a well-known American journalist (Robin Wright) well-intentionally urged me to change my name into an American sounding name. I remember telling her: I can’t see me as Stanley Smith.

Today, a historic mass funeral in Gaza City laid to rest 112 Palestinian civilians from the Abu Sharia and Al-Hasayna families, making it the largest single-event funeral procession in Palestinian history. These victims were killed on November 22, 2023, during a devastating Israeli airstrike that completely leveled a densely populated residential block in al-Sabra neighborhood, claiming the lives of approximately 308 people in total. Because israeli intense military attacks and severe equipment shortages blocked emergency access to the site, the bodies remained trapped under the concrete rubble for over two and a half years. The collective burial finally took place at the Baptist Cemetery following an arduous, days-long recovery operation by the Gaza Civil Defense, drawing thousands of mourners to honor the victims, who included over 40 children and 30 women.

Now ask yourself this: if this had happened anywhere else in the world, would there have been live coverage from the scene? Would journalists from CNN, BBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CBC, Sky News, France 24, or other major international outlets have been broadcasting this funeral to a global audience?

Surely, many a single victim elsewhere could command hours of international coverage. But sorry, the victims are Palestinians and the mainstream media does not even consider them human.

فاللجان التي شُكِّلَتْ من أجل وقف الحرب لم يكن هدفها فقط تحقيق الاستقرار في تلك المنطقة، بل كانت هناك أهداف أخرى اقتصادية وسياسية مختلفة تماما. وإنني أتمنى ألا تُغَلَّبَ المطامع الاقتصادية والسياسية والمصالح الأخرى على الجوانب الإنسانية القاسية، التي تطحن أهل غزة من مجاعة وانعدام للمأوى صيفا وشتاء في الحر والبرد، حيث لم ينفذ أي من الوعود الدولية التي قطعت لوقف الحرب.
وكما أشرت سابقا فالحرب على غزة قامت أصلا لأسباب كثيرة ، ولكن هل كانت صائبة أم خاطئة فإن هذا ليس وقت الحديث عنها. والمهم الآن هو يجب القيام بصورة عاجلة لمساعدة أهل غزة ووقف جرائم إسرائيل، فكل ما يجري هدفه في النهاية هو تهجير اهل غزة وهذه هي سياسة نتنياهو التي يجب ألا يسمح العالم بتحقيقها
