It’s time to say goodbye to Outreach Officer Sara and the JOIDES Resolution with a final livestream event on February 7th at 12 noon EST. Join us for your last chance to ask questions at https://t.co/nODOI2bkCg
Just like that, #Exp398 is almost over! It's been such an amazing ride working with schools and journalists from all over the world. Tune into my last livestream from @TheJR for @ReachtheWorldco in a few hours to hear all about the last days of the expedition :)
@GeneralsPride Oceanography students connected live with drill ship @TheJR#Exp398 off the coast of Greece! Students were able to ask the captain & members of the sci party questions about the expedition! Thanks @saraewhit for the tour! @APSscience @WLHSAsstPrinPJ @Principal_WLHS
#Exp398 is in the Santorini Caldera! 😍 We sailed in during the perfect sunset golden hour and dropped our thrusters right after dark. Come wave at us if you're on the islands and float us out some fruits and veggies!

Join Reach the World tomorrow at 10 am as we interview Outreach Officer Sara aboard the scientific drilling vessel @TheJR as it continues to collect rock and sediment cores from the Mediterranean seabed far below. https://t.co/6HbGbDtEAW
The emphasis on disruption seems a very Silicon valley and masculine-dominated approach to the scientific enterprise. There is a place for moving fast and breaking things, but if you do it every day then things are just broken.
It's fascinating to me that many immediately assume that disruption in science = "good" and building on previous knowledge = "bad." Or at least somehow less valuable for the scientific enterprise.

American science has a "bullshit-paper problem"

I wrote about the new blockbuster paper showing disruption is plunging across almost every domain in science, why it's happening, and why the rules of modern research might be creating a surfeit of crap
Taking a closer look at this paper, I really dislike it.
It's clear that newer papers *must* have a lower “disruption” score than older ones under a null model — they even confirm this in the supplemental material with a randomization test.

#Exp398 loves talking to journalists! Outreach Officer @saraewhit spoke with her family's home paper about her work sharing expedition science. Reach out if you're a reporter hoping to chat with a scientist on board!

The City Paper was, so far as I could tell, the only paper in the area to cover the Post-Gazette, its labor relations, and its owner critically. Hard to see how it will be independent or how this will be good for the citizens of Pittsburgh.
