In response to the misleading figures used in the tweet below from @DHSCgovuk 👇 BMA Council Chair @DrPhilBanfield has today written to the Cabinet Secretary to request a formal investigation to see if it has broken civil service code.
Today it has been reported that during our first round of action in England mortality rate was 11.1% above the 5 year average.
What they haven’t reported was that in Wales, where no strike action took place, mortality rate was 14% above the 5 year average. 1/3
There’s a lot of confusion about junior doctors at the moment. Who are they? How much are they paid? Why are they striking? I’m a junior doctor, and thought I’d do a thread on the topic, so that people can link to it when someone spouts misinformation
A 🧵
Pret a manger don't expect their employees to pay to register to the General Coffee council at £420 per year, join the royal barista college at £390 per annum and take Barista exams at £ 785 a year to continue to work for them for 14 quid an hour
We remain willing to have meaningful discussions about #PayRestoration with @SteveBarclay. However, he has still not brought a credible offer to the table.
This is our message to him, ahead of our second round of strikes 👇
Here’s my payslip as a first year doctor in 2005, next to a first year doctor colleague’s in 2023. 18 years later, their take home salary is less than mine was. I lived for free in hospital accommodation and had a fraction of their student loan.

Have you read your own article?
It quotes me saying “we remain open to entering talks with government anytime and anywhere”
It’s you stonewalling us with nonsensical preconditions
It’s you who didn’t turn up on friday
It’s you who won’t make us an offer
Just a reminder that we had a meeting today which @SteveBarclay failed to attend…
Without any credible negotiations we have no choice but to strike on Monday and continue our fight for #PayRestoration#JuniorDoctorsStrike
So consultants are popping up to say how unreasonable it is to expect them to handle junior-level jobs they don't do often/navigate hospital systems they aren't families with.
Erm... how the hell do you think foundation doctors do it every four months then?
"Nurses deserve it more"
We all deserve #PayRestoration. Doctors are not rolling in money. On £14-28 an hour, with professional expenses, debt and often no access to family childcare; many doctors are hard up.
Our dispute is not with nurses and it isn't a zero sum game.
Did you clap for the NHS during covid? If you did, now is the time to support nurses, doctors & other professionals who will soon to balloting for industrial action. Clapping didn’t pay any bills. Clapping doesn’t repay good will. Clapping doesn’t replace staff who are leaving.
