Great to hear George Shillinger (@UpwellTurtles ) on the importance of satellite tagging, novel scientific approaches, and transboundary policy measures to protect the highly endangered leatherback sea turtle #IMCC7
Dan Skerritt (@oceana ) at #IMCC7: the opaque distant water fishing industry is supported by a global collection of service providers - and by targeting those services we can disrupt bad fishing behavior.
We made it to Cape Town! So happy to be at #IMCC with my awesome @oceana colleagues. Great marine conservation convos already underway and more to come!
Diva Amon at #IMCC7 : the deep sea is amazing - some organisms older than the pyramids!
We don’t have a ton of data and we do need more science - but we can’t let that stop us from protecting it now.
Virginia Burns Perez describes challenges and successes in managing and protecting Belize’s (spectacular) Turneffe Atoll through new tech + collaboration
“With colonization came conservation. There is no word in any African language that means conservation.”

@COMRC_ORG no, saying that "opposing dsm = supporting suffering" is not a fact - but it IS a false dichotomy. how about decreasing our reliance on materials that are so difficult & damaging to acquire?
"I really don't want to be a fact-checking bitch about this.. I'm so sorry to correct you but I can't help it. It's who I am as a person and I do not like it either."
My favorite line from John Oliver's excellent deep sea mining explainer https://t.co/zMG1Ne0Ov2
@WayneyyW@oceana@TEDx I wish there was a magical date :) but it's gradual. In some cases, harmful fishing is already stopped with fish stocks recovering/recovered. In others, measures still need to be implemented - that's what Oceana & allies are fighting for! https://t.co/4BM6meG0BM
@WayneyyW@oceana@TEDx Thanks for watching! It's true that a lot of stocks are overfished (about 35% per the FAO) but it's also true that fish stocks actually recover under science-based fisheries management :)
#WATCH: @sarahbedolfe, Oceana Marine Scientist, untangles how fishing innovation can save endangered ocean wildlife while benefitting sustainable fisheries at @TEDx! https://t.co/GsaZWBcvmG
Second Call for Abstracts! After 700 submissions from 67 nations, we are opening a second call for abstracts due to popular demand! We have limited spaces so don't miss out and get your abstracts in by June 7, 2024.

READ: Oil spills are not just environmental disasters, they are tragedies the countless marine animals that call our oceans home. From sea turtles to seabirds, no creature is spared from the devastating effects of these catastrophic events. https://t.co/x7eBVD9DC3
Who remembers the OC oil spill?🙋 Well the FBI investigated. This great article details scientific approach (interesting!) - and long-awaited outcomes: https://t.co/wjqdMNUL84
Thanks for the great teaser story @ocregister@lagunaini . The organizers and speakers were all fantastic - the event really lived up to its promise! https://t.co/UVYOeLaL3O
Honored to speak @TEDx Laguna Beach about how science & tech can help save endangered species + secure sustainable fisheries - a success story made possible by the work of @oceana & partners. Incredible speaker lineup to be a part of and, YES, there will be video!
