Few people know tired like teachers. In fact research found that teachers make more minute-by-minute decisions than brain surgeons, and that’s extremely tiring. Then add in classrooms full of students & all the adaptations this year.
Holding kids to high expectations isn’t giving them really rigorous curriculum and then holding their hands through the process to get them through it. Holding kids to high expectations is giving them appropriately challenging work and allowing them to struggle through it.
It can be hard to understand how to make the leap into self-paced learning. Especially when you have taught in a fixed-paced format for years. I certainly struggled to make the shift initially. Hopefully this piece can provide some guidance 3/3: https://t.co/HEM293MQoX
Kids who feel perpetually rushed and confused start to ask themselves concerning questions like:
1. Why am I always lost?
2. Why am I so bad at school?
3. Maybe I am not built for education?
When the pattern continues, students no longer believe in the power education. 2/3
THREAD: It’s convenient to have every kid transition to the next lesson at the same time, but the consequences of fixed paced learning are destructive. The damages on students’ sense of self-worth in the classroom are real and hard to recover from. 1/3
