Dakle, odlučeno je: telo ratnog zločinca Ratka Mladića danas stiže u Srbiju, gde će mu država organizovati sahranu. Ne postoje reči kojima se može opisati potpuni moralni krah Srbije - društva koje sa uživanjem slavi monstruma koji je direktno naredio ubijanje desetina hiljada ljudi u Škabrnji, Srebrenici, kao i širom Hrvatske i Bosne i Hercegovine. Pokušavam da razumem kako jedan narod može toliko da izgubi razum i pravi procesiju ludaku koji je pucao maloletnoj deci u leđa. Kakvi to dijabolični nagoni upravljaju kolektivom koji je sposoban za tako nešto? Ja odgovor na to nemam. Srbija se već danas ispisuje iz civilizacije i upisuje u mračnu knjigu beščašća, s one strane ljudskosti.

Slavni elizabetanski pesnik Džon Don napisao je meditaciju 'Nijedan čovek nije ostrvo' gledajući sa prozora svoje kuće u Londonu pogrebne povorke žrtava kuge. Pun tekst glasi: 'Nijedan čovek nije ostrvo, sam po sebi celina; svaki je čovek deo kontinenta, deo kopna. Ako grudvu zemlje odnese more, Evrope je manje, kao da je odnelo neki rt, kao da je odnelo posed tvojih prijatelja ili tvoj sopstveni. Smrt svakog čoveka smanjuje mene, jer sam obuhvaćen čovečanstvom. I zato nikada ne pitaj za kim zvono zvoni; ono zvoni za tobom.'

Zato i danas moje misli idu ka senkama nevino pobijenih duša u Škabrnji, Srebrenici i na svim drugim stratištima. Srbija od danas pripada nekom drugom svetu - svetu u koji čestita noga više neće kročiti.

So, it has been decided: the body of war criminal Ratko Mladić arrives in Serbia today, and the state will organize his funeral. No words can describe the absolute moral collapse and bankruptcy of Serbia - a country that gleefully celebrates a monster who directly ordered the slaughter of tens of thousands of people in Škabrnja, Srebrenica, and across Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. I try to comprehend how an entire nation can lose its mind to such an extent, holding a procession for a madman who shot underage children in the back. What kind of diabolical urges drive a collective capable of doing such a thing? I have no answer. As of today, Serbia signs out of civilization and writes itself into the dark book of infamy, far beyond the boundaries of humanity.

The famous Elizabethan poet John Donne wrote his meditation 'No Man Is an Island' while watching the funeral processions of plague victims from his London window. The full text reads: 'No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.'

This is why today my thoughts go out to the shadows of the innocently murdered souls in Škabrnja, Srebrenica, and all other sites of war crimes. Serbia now belongs to another world - a world where an honorable foot will never tread again.

Het besluit is dus gevallen: het lichaam van oorlogsmisdadiger Ratko Mladić komt vandaag aan in Servië, en de staat zal zijn begrafenis organiseren. Woorden schieten tekort om het totale morele verval en het bankroet van Servië te beschrijven - een land dat met puur genoegen een monster viert dat direct bevel gaf tot de moord op tienduizenden mensen in Škabrnja, Srebrenica en in andere delen van Kroatië en Bosnië en Herzegovina. Ik probeer te begrijpen hoe een heel volk zo zijn verstand kan verliezen dat het een processie houdt voor een gek die minderjarige kinderen in de rug schoot. Welke diabolische driften sturen een collectiviteit aan die tot zoiets in staat is? Ik heb er geen antwoord op. Servië schrijft zich vandaag nog uit de beschaving en laat zich bijschrijven in het duistere boek der schande, aan de andere kant van de menselijkheid.

Daarom gaan mijn gedachten vandaag uit naar de schimmen van de onschuldig vermoorde zielen in Škabrnja, Srebrenica en alle andere plaatsen waar oorlogsmisdaden zijn gepleegd. Servië behoort vanaf nu tot een andere wereld - een wereld waar geen fatsoenlijk mens nog een voet zal zetten.
