Death at Sea is the worthy winner of the Postgraduate Factual Short Form award. @UWEBristol’s Sara Pipernos, Mikey Sneddon & Nyal Mueenuddin “sensitively told” their story “with strong access, opening a window into an unknown world,” said judges #RTSStudent
🧵Last night I watched #DeathAtSea,a moving film by talented @sarapipernos, on the death of fisheries observers, focused on the story of Eritara Aati from Kiribati who died (murdered?) on a 🇹🇼 vessel in 2020.

As promised, big news out of #IATTC. We now have a harvest strategy for North Pacific albacore. Big props to @FishOceansCAN, @NOAAFisheries, and Japanese Fisheries Agency for making this happen. @Hrvststrategies 1/
BREAKING NEWS (1/2): The gavel has dropped at IOTC, and among several adopted resolutions is a measure proposed by Japan to establish catch limits for bigeye tuna! This will help ensure that the total-allowable catch from the #harveststrategy is adhered to https://t.co/UaPV0vteh0
It finally happened!!! Massive congrats to both ICCAT for passing this massive package of sustainable policy and to everyone who worked in the background to push it forward. Such amazing news for this fishery !
This is finally the bluefin tuna’s year! NO, SERIOUSLY. After more than a decade of advocacy, nations have finally come together to pass a #HarvestStrategy at this year’s #ICCAT and we couldn’t be happier! #THANKYOU
#Breakingnews - The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) board has approved their new Standard, which will be published in October 2022 & go into effect in May 2023. What does this mean for the harvest strategy portion of the Standard? https://t.co/5nuEhQWH3v
After finally ending decades of overfishing, Atlantic bluefin tuna populations are rebuilding.
Now is the time to secure much-needed gains by adopting a new policy at #ICCAT.
THREAD 👇
A management procedure for bluefin tuna this year at ICCAT would be unreal in the world of fisheries management. Just imagine, every time you eat Atl bluefin, you can be certain the stock is managed sustainably (and will be for years to come)!
Today, Panel 2 meets to discuss management objectives, MSE updates, & management procedure (MP) performance for Atlantic bluefin tuna. ICCAT's commitment to finalize the MP this year is admirable and will prove vital to long-term industry profitability and stock health!
This week @pewenvironment, we are having our strategy session for our RFMO work in 2022. Gonna be a huge year for @Hrvststrategies all around the world. Good thing we have a good group of smart people to help usher in these policies. Getting the politics out of fisheries mgmt.
The gavel has dropped, WCPFC18 has come to an end.
Congrats to the WCPFC for establishing a sci-manager dialogue group to discuss #HS in August 2022! All members must work to ensure a robust discussion on elements needed to progress harvest strategies.
What else happened? A🧵/6
It’s already Dec 1 in Pohnpei, aka day 1 of plenary at WCPFC’s Commission meeting. Lots to discuss, but would love to see the establishment of a scientist-manager dialogue group! They provide such a good forum for making progress on harvest strategies- what’s not too like??
@timonroad@Hrvststrategies@wcpfc Yes, harvest strategies took up about 30% of the SC mtg but management aspects took up about 0%.
PBF (currently at 4.5% of historic population size) and the proposed increase should be discussed at WCPFC next week as it is NOT a harvest strategy as WCPFC defines it.
