Subhash Chandra Garg’s latest attack on the new GDP series deserves a refresher.
On 5 March 2026, barely a week after the new GDP series was released, Garg published a piece in The Quint examining the very revision he now describes as “fiddled”.
And his verdict then was remarkably clear.
As the highlighted excerpt shows, Garg compared the old and new series on precisely the issue he is now using to attack the methodology. He wrote that the new series is:
“much more representative of current production and consumption in the country”
and
“can, therefore, be taken as more accurate.”
More accurate than the old series.
He further described the downward revision in nominal GDP as “very bad news, which the new GDP series has honestly communicated.”
That was Garg’s assessment in March.
Today, he has completely inverted that assessment.
The old series’ higher figure has suddenly become his benchmark. The new series’ lower figure, the same revision he previously acknowledged as more representative and more accurate, has now become evidence of alleged manipulation.
The numbers did not change. Garg’s narrative did.
This is not a disagreement over methodology. It is an extraordinary reversal of position on the very same GDP revision within months.
When the numbers supported his argument, the new series was “more accurate” and had “honestly communicated” bad news.
When the same numbers no longer serve his narrative, the methodology is suddenly “fiddled”.
This is less economic analysis and more motivated reasoning. We now know why he was likely ousted as Finance Secretary.
Normally, I wouldn't like to use expletitives for elders, but just look at this fucking idiot!
He used to be the finance secretary, but is induldging in such blatant data forgery/intellectual dishonesty that it's unbelievable.
He says the last year's data was revised downwards to make way for the new methodology. But then he compares the new data with last year's numbers calculated with the old methodology.
If this charlatan had any intellect (or integrity), he would know that data sets can be compared, only if the methodology is the same for both.
How can he compare last year's data (with old methodology) to this year's data (with new methodology), or vice-versa? Without being a total fucking moron, or an out-and-out asshole?
He can't.
Again, not proud of using expletitives for elders. But this asshole deserves it. Guys like these don't deserve any respect. They need to be isolated and shamed.
Subash Chandra Garg, unceremoniously sent packing for Finance Ministry, and since then perpetually disgruntled, has sprung to life to once again make a fool of himself.
Here are facts
Garg's entire argument rests on mixing up two different things. And not because of ignorance but due to malice.
Think of the base year GDP shift (2011-12 to 2022-23) and change in measurement techniques like switching from measuring land in yards to measuring it in metres and then Garg suddenly waking up and saying saying "the distance was 10 yards, now it's 9 metres, so it shrank." The distance didn't change, the ruler did.
Let’s make this actually simple.
First, ₹80 lakh crore ( Q1 FY 25-26) → ₹88.27 lakh crore ( Q1 FY 26-27) does NOT give you 7.8% growth.
It gives you roughly 10.3% NOMINAL GDP growth for Q1 FY 26-27.
The reported 7.8% is REAL GDP growth, calculated at constant prices:
₹75.46 lakh crore → ₹81.36 lakh crore = 7.8%.
That alone should tell you how seriously wrong is his argument.
Now come to the ₹86 lakh crore figure.
Yes, Q1 FY 25-26 nominal GDP was earlier estimated at roughly ₹86 lakh crore.
But that was under the old 2011-12 GDP series.
India has since moved to the new 2022-23 series.
This base year shift involves using double deflation (recommended by UN) for manufacturing, (roughly 600 deflators instead of earlier only 180), Proportional Denton benchmarking, and new data sources like GST returns, e-Vahan registrations, ASUSE and PLFS surveys. MoSPI has increased the number of deflators from 180 to about 600 as part of this change.
Historical GDP numbers have consequently been recalculated.
Under this new series, Q1 FY 25-26 nominal GDP is around ₹80 lakh crore.
So doing:
₹86 lakh crore nominal GDP FY 25-26 [OLD SERIES] → ₹88.27 lakh crore nominal GDP 26-27 [NEW SERIES] and announcing that India's growth is therefore only 2.6% is statistical nonsense.
You cannot take the denominator from one GDP series and the numerator from another.
If the allegation is that this exercise was done to artificially inflate growth, there is a rather inconvenient problem.
Look at what the SAME new series did to earlier growth estimates:
FY 23- 24: 9.2% → 7.2%
FY 24- 25: 6.5% → 7.1%
Q1 FY 25- 26: 7.8% → 6.7%
Q2 FY 25-26: 8.2% → 8.4%
Some revised UP. Some revised DOWN.
In fact, Q1 FY 25-26 growth itself was revised DOWN by 1.1 percentage points, while FY 23-24 was revised down by a massive 2 percentage points.
Quite an extraordinary way to "inflate" GDP growth!
The new series announcement isn't a trick invented for this one quarter either. The new method was announced and explained back in February 2026, months before this number came out and in fact weeks before this quarter even started.
This rebasing of base year is also not a first time trick invented by Modi government. It is done every few years in every economy and mandated by all world organisations.
And this is hardly unprecedented.
When India last changed its GDP base year from 2004-05 to 2011-12 in 2015, the numbers changed dramatically.
For FY 2013-14, growth that had been reported at around 4.7% under the old headline GDP-at-factor-cost measure became 6.9% for GDP at market prices under the new series.
Even those new-series estimates did not remain frozen.
Subsequent revisions changed the numbers again, with FY 2013-14 revised downward and FY 2012-13 revised upward as more complete data became available.
That is precisely the point.
Changing a GDP series is not simply replacing one base-year number with another. Data sources, coverage, methodology, classifications and deflators can change, and historical GDP estimates are reconstructed accordingly.
The resulting revisions can move growth rates both UP and DOWN.

As regards why Garg has crawled out now - it is hardly a choice. A Garg here comparing two different measures; A Rajan there slamming India for manufacturing chips.....all specimens will crawl out.....
After all, someone must look out for @RahulGandhi and his minions.
Brilliant!
Absolutely brilliant!
👏👍
Congress leader Rajeev Shukla said that if Narendra Modi was not the Prime Minister, then America would never have invited him....!!
Reply by Chauhan Bau Nath, USA
Honourable Shukla Ji and Congressmen,
Now I will tell you the story of this "if"...
1) If Rahul Gandhi was not Sonia's son, he would only have been a peon in some office today...!!😂😂
2) If Sonia was not Rajiv's wife, she would have been a retired bar girl from some bar in Europe...!!😂😂
3) If Rajiv was not Indira Gandhi's son, he would have spent his days as a "pilot"...!!😂😂
4) If Indira Gandhi had not been Nehru's daughter, she would have remained an ordinary muslim housewife...!!😂😂
5) If Gandhi-Nehru along with Jinnah had not betrayed the people of India in the greed for power, today Akhand Bharat would have remained united....!! 😂😂
6) “If Nehru had not dishonestly become the Prime Minister in place of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then China would not have been so influential today, nor Pakistan would have been born, nor would this Kashmir problem would have ever arisen...!!😂😂
7) And "if" this Congress was not there, then this fake Gandhi family would not have even existed. The whole country would not have been ruined in nepotism and communal violence by falling into the clutches of these traitors and scamsters. Rather, India would have been the leader of all the countries of the World...!!
😂😂
Rajeev Shukla ji....
“If Narendra Modi was not the Prime Minister of India, then there would have been no other Prime Minister of India who would have looked into the eyes of the US President and talked to him…!! 😂😂
What a befitting reply.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Last year has seen India's highest ever GST collection: $270 billion; highest ever vehicle sales: 29 million; highest ever Manufacturing PMI: 59.3; highest ever Forex reserves: $726 billion; highest ever Sensex: 86,100. And now Q1 GDP zooms to 7.8%.
Terrible. Modi must resign.
Smashing rebuttal by @IGuruPrakash to Rahul Gandhi’s bogus posturing over ‘patriarchy’ and Congress portraying him as an anti-Patriarch.
RaGa’s spokie is stunned and does not quite know how to respond to this lesson in history.
RaGa is ill-informed, so are his trumpeteers.
Rajiv Gandhi had 426 LS MPs & 159 Rajya Sabha MPs. A brute majority to carry out any constitutional changes.
Yet, he ended up reversing the Shah Bano Judgement to deny her ₹180 monthly alimony, to appease the mullahs.
This is how Congress smashed patriarchy !!!
The most baseless argument I have read on X for some time. Doesn't matter what reasons the govt gave to get it done, I said this then, will say it again - note bandi broke the back of a decade of economic warfare and terror against India in one night. And that's why it was done.
Though India took economic pain for two years, it was highly necessary for national sovereignty and security. It also paved the way for revocation of Art 370, end of naxalism, and reduction in Pak sponsored terrorism inside India. Only an apolitical future in a 100 years will show how important it was for India.
@SauravDassss Never thought that the downfall of CJP would begin so soon. 😭😭
There is no shortcut to reforms. You can abuse the Prime Minister of the country, you can force the education minister to resign, but you cannot fool the 1.4 billion people of this country.
CJP 😂😂😂
Nehru opposed Vande Mataram in 1950
Indira ignored it
Rajiv mocked it
Sonia stops it after 1st para
Four generations. One hatred.
Time to end this anti-national dynasty.
Forever. 🚫
