Petrichor - Rain’s Unique Scent

Have you ever smelled the rain? The peculiar smell just after the first rains is called petrichor - earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word comes from Ancient Greek πέτρα (pétra) 'rock', or πέτρος (pétros) 'stone', and ἰχώρ (ikhṓr), the ethereal fluid that is the blood of the gods in Greek mythology.

The human nose is incredibly sensitive to this smell and is able to detect it at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per billion. So, if you smell rain before leaving home, better pack an umbrella!
