#TNIEimpact | After 40 years in darkness, hope finally arrives.

Forty long years of struggle living without electricity has ended for Dalit residents of #Theerthakadu village near #Madurai's #Vandiyur as #Tangedco officials started installing electricity poles in the locality. Five families would get power supply in the Phase-I of the electrification work.

The development comes months after the #TNIE highlighted the plight of the village in a report titled ‘Red tape: Dalit families live in dark for 40 years in Tamil Nadu’, published on February 13, 2026.

While this marks a historic milestone, hundreds of families are still waiting for land pattas and basic amenities such as drinking water, roads, and sanitation.

Monkey menace continues at Melur Government Hospital!

Though the number of monkeys has reduced, patients and visitors are still troubled by the nuisance on the hospital campus. Officials say the problem continues mainly because people keep feeding the animals.

#TamilNadu Chemists and Druggists Association (#TNCDA) has announced a one-day bandh on Wednesday (May 20), in solidarity with the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists’s (#AIOCD) call for a one-day nationwide strike, to protest against several long-pending issues, including illegal e-pharmacy operations.

#TNCDA, which has around 40,000 members, has also sought the support of corporate and CM pharmacies for the strike.
