Sam, there's a huge difference between teaching reading via a sight word strategy and teaching it with a phonics strategy.
But of course we eventually build a vast store of words that are recognized instantly without the need to decode them sound by sound.
The question is which strategy is most effective at building that store of words.
Brain research would seem to suggest that the sight-word strategy activates the same areas of the right brain used by inefficient and struggling readers, rather than developing the pathway in the left brain used by proficient readers.
From my point of view, this is an important distinction because I believe it's the failure of that second, faster, pathway in the left brain to fully develop that could be responsible for making reading difficult for many. And if that's the case, we should be focusing on why that happens and how to address it.
