Named after the late Dr. Kodmani, a visionary advocate for democratic transitions and inclusive governance, this fellowship continues her legacy of engaged scholarship and transformative research.

We seek a committed researcher to analyze Syria’s political transition, addressing key issues in governance, human rights, and security. The fellowship offers a flexible location, with a significant focus on fieldwork in Syria as conditions allow.

The selected fellow will join ARI’s dynamic team, producing high-impact research and policy recommendations while collaborating with an extensive network of regional and international partners.

☂️This new Research by Farah Al Shami, Senior Fellow and Program Director of ARI's Social Protection Program, provides an in-depth analysis of the social protection financing landscape in the Arab region. It highlights key challenges and proposes solutions such as contributory schemes, fiscal reforms, debt relief, climate finance, and global funding mechanisms.

📑Farah. draws comparative insights from Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, and Morocco, and emphasizes the importance of universal social protection systems financed by redistributive tax policies and solidarity economy initiatives. Webinar: Shifting Sands: Local Aftershocks, Regional Alliances and the Aftermath of October 7

Since Hamas’ October 7 attacks and the Israeli war on Gaza, the region has gone through major political aftershocks leading to war between Israel and Lebanon and major military confrontations involving Iran, the Houthis and Iraqi militias. This webinar will explore the shifts that have occurred across the Arab region over the past year, focusing on the interaction between domestic shifts, reconfiguration of regional alliances and discuss how these changes have affected the region’s outlook.

Using the imagery of aftershocks, the webinar will discuss the repercussions of the war on the first circle of countries (Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt) and then move to discuss the impact on Yemen, Iraq and the Gulf. Amidst increasing murmurs of Israeli leaders and their American backers seeing an opportunity to reshape a “new Middle East” with a weakened Iran, what space for the region’s own voices and priorities and what alliances are possible?

The concept of extractivism in academic research involves exploitative practices that disproportionately affect marginalized communities and academics in the Global South.

Extractive research often benefits the academic and their career while offering little to research partners or participants.

This workshop aims to address extractivism in academia within the Middle East, highlighting the challenges faced by Middle Eastern academics and promoting decolonial ethics in research.

The discussion will focus on engaged scholarship, collaborative knowledge production, and non-traditional professional pathways to combat extractivism.

The workshop will be a closed event for early career scholars, conducted in English and Arabic with simultaneous translation.
