The epicentre of this was in a city known as Mandalay. Initially, the Indian contingent, when it had gone thereon the request of the Myanmar authorities, had gone to the capital, which had seen a lot of damage...Initially, we had gone with a 118-member contingent, subsequently, as we saw the devastation...ultimately, there was a 123-member strong contingent in that country, which included a variety of surgeons, all kinds of specialists for trauma care, laboratory activities, X-ray facilities and everything else to be able to conduct life-saving surgeries..." VIDEO | Brigadier Naveen Kumar, VSM, Commander 50 Parachute Brigade, says, "Operation Brahma, humanitarian relief and disaster assistance mission, which was launched by Indian military based on the 7.7 Richter scale earthquake that ravaged the country (Myanmar). When we went there... the scale of devastation was quite huge. Lot of buildings had collapsed, lot of infrastructure had gone redundant, many airfields were difficult to reach. It is success of our strategic aircraft that we were able to reach out within the first night itself. We established 200-bedded hospital there, within 12 hours of reaching, we were starting to reach out to patients. In all, about 2,509 patients were treated which included about 65 major surgeries."
