Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger has dedicated her career to defending freedom, the rule of law, privacy, and human dignity. As Germany’s former Federal Minister of Justice, she became known as a principled voice for civil liberties and constitutional safeguards, even when defending them came at a political cost.
Her resignation in 1996 over the expansion of telecommunications surveillance remains one of the clearest examples of her liberal conviction.

Through her continued advocacy and leadership within the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger has helped shape liberal thought and politics far beyond Germany. Congratulations to the Award!
