EU environment campaigner, mum of 3 boys, north Londoner now living in Spain. I work to speed up the energy transition. now you can find me where sky is blue
Here’s a crazy fact for you: Spain and Germany have now seen basically the exact same amount of economic growth post-2008. Would have been unthinkable to people during most of the 2010s. Spain has seen ~10 percentage points more cumulative growth since 2017.
@CleaningUpPod@rorysutherland@OgilvyUK@MLiebreich Really interesting topic, glad you address it and talk about behavioural solutions. Rory scores rather high on the pompous arse ranking unfortunately.
EU subsidized fossil fuels more generously than renewables ('22)
@davidfickling is back:✍️
"Need 1 piece of absurdity? US has more restrictions on importing Malaysian solar panels made with Chinese materials than it has on importing Indian diesel made from Russian crude oil."
The more we heat up the atmosphere and the oceans, the more stunning rainfall extremes we will see. It’s physics. Climate scientists have warned of this for more than three decades.
Climate change is up 10 points in Spanish voters' list of top priorities, following recent floods there.
Good example here of why the politics of climate change isn't going away.
Now the 3rd biggest issue for governing PSOE voters (up from sixth).
What does a Trump win mean for COP29?
The incoming climate denier will loom large. But before panic sets in, we should examine the lessons from history.
The task at hand is for the rest of the world to show the value of multilateral climate cooperation.

New from IEA: "A single journey by a large container ship filled with solar PV modules can provide the means to generate the same amount of electricity as the natural gas from more than 50 large LNG tankers or the coal from more than 100 large bulk ships." https://t.co/ivgeZYWuZI
And this is why the West should be deeply concerned by this chart. Held back by fossil lobbyists, electrification is being made too slow and too expensive in most western countries.
Let’s get something straight about fossil fuel phase-out: renewables needn’t replace all the coal, oil and gas we use today bc most of it is just used to produce and move those fossil fuels around!
We only need to replace the useful energy: 37% of what we currently produce 🫨🧵

🌄Solar up 4x by 2030, top ⚡️ source by 2033
🥇Clean energy +44% by 2030, top *energy* source by "mid-30s"
🛢️EVs displace 6mb/d by 2030 (⏫4mb/d last yr)
⛰️Fossil fuels peak by 2030

While the growth *rate* in EVs has slowed, sales are still going up ⬆️ significantly, and on track to reach a fifth (20%) of global annual vehicle sales for the first time.
Plenty of reasons for optimism in 2025 for EV transition

It’s bad enough to burn wood for electricity- so inefficient, high emissions and not renewable in any meaningful timescale for the climate. Add destroying old growth forest. Shameful, scandalous
Drax shown to have taken wood from Canadian old-growth forest
"forests that are native species that [have] not been previously harvested” as described in internal emails
The wood will have been turned into pellets, shipped to UK, burnt for 'clean power'

The overconfidence in overshoot is that it can be avoided.
A key message of the last IPCC cycle: unless emissions are reduced, 1.5°C is beyond reach!
In case you are not aware, emissions have not been reduced. Logically, that means [fill in the blank]

In a competitive field this is one of the worst things I have ever read on climate change and net zero. A complete failure to understand either the pace of the clean tech revolution or the severity of the climate crisis. It is tacit climate denial and defeatism in equal measure.
WOW – The IEA has boosted its latest renewable forecast by another 16%
Just 9 months ago, in January 2024, its Renewables 2023 report forecast 3,200GW of capacity – mainly wind and solar – would be built around the world during the five years 2024-2028.
Now, in Renewables 2024, it's significantly increased that forecast, to 3,700GW over the same five years – and a massive 5,500GW by 2030.
It's now forecasting two-thirds more renewable capacity being built than just two years ago.
