This 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸, 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹-𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 you see on your screen was once promised to become as clean and pristine as the Seine Riverfront of 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀.

That promise was made back in 2013.

But two decades have passed, and not even the slightest improvement is visible in the 𝗝𝗼𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗥𝗮𝗷𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻.

In fact, locals say the pollution has only worsened over time.

Once a seasonal river carrying clean water from the Nagaur hills, the Jojari now turns into a 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗹-𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗸𝗲 as it passes through Jodhpur’s industrial belt.

Over 700 industrial units, textile dyeing, steel, chemical factories, continue to discharge untreated effluents directly into the river.

This has 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 their homes and fields.

Those who remain report rising cases of skin diseases and respiratory illnesses, especially among women and children.

It’s not just humans who suffer. Wildlife is dying too.

There was a time when 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗱𝘀 of about 300 now reduced to just 30.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱.

Native trees that once shaded the riverbanks now stand withered, poisoned by the toxic flow.

And all this happens despite huge sums of money being sanctioned repeatedly.

In 2023, ₹𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲 was allocated to clean the river.

In 2024, ₹𝟭𝟳𝟮.𝟱𝟴 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲.

In February 2025, ₹𝟭𝟳𝟲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲 was released.

Yet affected villagers say they have seen no real improvement.

Why?

Because politicians across parties know voters rarely vote based on issues like 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵, 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Instead, votes are often cast along communal or caste lines.

So, leaders to impose strict action continue to rely on communal and caste divisions to secure power.

-------------------------

That’s why, as 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 often emphasizes, the real change must begin with 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 themselves.

Once voters begin to prioritize the right issues, they will demand accountability.

They will elect leaders sensitive to these existential problems, and reject those who ignore them.

And if elected representatives fail to deliver, citizens in a true democracy must ensure they do not complete their term.

This is what democracy is meant to be, and this is what we urgently need today.

[Abhinay Maths @abhinaymaths]

[Abhinay Maths @abhinaymaths]

[Abhinay Maths @abhinaymaths]

[Abhinay Maths @abhinaymaths]

[Abhinay Maths @abhinaymaths]
