real GDP growth is the global standard for measuring actual expansion of output and living standards — the IMF, World Bank, and every major economy use it for that reason. India’s 7% (vs China 4.5% and world 3.1%) reflects volume growth after adjusting for domestic inflation.

The ~3.9% figure in current USD is not a growth rate in the same sense. It is heavily distorted by rupee depreciation against a strong dollar (driven by the oil shock, global dollar strength, and capital flows). The same rupee output simply converts into fewer dollars. This is an exchange-rate effect, not evidence that factories, services, or domestic demand are stagnating. IMF officials have themselves noted that currency pressure does not signal economic failure given India’s strong fundamentals.

Medium-term projections still show India becoming the world’s 4th-largest economy by 2027 (~$4.5 trillion) and higher average USD growth thereafter. One year’s FX-adjusted nominal comparison does not overturn the real growth picture or the trajectory.

Real growth tracks domestic production and welfare; USD nominal tracks ranking and external valuation and is volatile. Mixing the two to downplay the former is the real apples-to-oranges exercise.
