During the Unisa Lekgotla, Mrs Nombulelo Sesi Nxesi, former CEO of the Education, Training and Development Practices SETA (ETDP SETA), reflected on the changing role of universities in a contested and rapidly evolving distance‑learning environment. She challenged the traditional view of universities as custodians of knowledge, noting that information is now widely accessible, and argued that their real value lies in developing critical thinkers, advancing research that addresses societal, national and global challenges, and preparing graduates for work that does not yet exist. Raising concerns about graduate unemployment, she emphasised the importance of strong partnerships, the will to apply learning, and courageous leadership. Recognising Unisa’s unique history and responsibility, she called on the institution to move beyond management and boldly reimagine its future.
