Planes, trains, automobiles & balloons! Our first wave of team members are starting to head south to New Zealand and then on to McMurdo Station Antarctica today.
Picture by SPT winter over @aman_chokshi of the Milky Way above the South Pole Telescope! Highly recommend following Aman, if you don’t already, been a series of amazing photos by him this winter! #southpole#aurorafest2022
A moon pillar rising over a thin crescent moon just before it set. What's really interesting is that a couple of hours after the first shot, a moon pillar was still visible to the left of the @uw_icecube laboratory, though the moon had dropped below the horizon! 🌙
A timelapse of the Lunar eclipse at the #SouthPole. Exposures in this video ranged between 1/13-20s to cover the crazy dynamic range of the full moon and the dark night sky, smoothly ramped with @LRTimelapse to show how the stars and the Milky Way emerged further into the eclipse
So lucky that the weather cleared up just before sunset. We got to see the legendary #GreenFlash a couple of times. An absolutely glorious night shooting images of the sun and observing supermassive #blackholes with @ehtelescope and the @SPTelescope ✨
The @SPTelescope in twilight! An almost full moon just rose, and the colors are spectacular. Here the telescope is performing pointing calibration a couple of hours before day two of @ehtelescope observing begins 🌕
Very rare to have sundogs at the #SouthPole so late in the season, when the sun is only 3.25 deg above the horizon. On the lower left the @ehtelescope mirrors are visible on the @SPTelescope, installed today, as we gear up to observe black holes soon! @BICEP_Keck on the right
13.8 billion years ago a massive explosion caused the universe to rapidly expand in an event we now know as the Big Bang.
This intensely hot period gave way to a cooler Universe where the first hydrogen atoms began to form.

Another great video from @JoeSpins, where SPT's Dr. Sasha Rahlin gives a tour of the telescope! This video also includes some of the most impressive animations and graphics that I've ever seen in a CMB video! #southpole#CMB https://t.co/4XgeVBVJWo
Great interview with 2021 SPT winter over Dr. Sasha Rahlin! @sasharahlin tells us a little about herself, and what its like to winterover for the SPT! Can't wait for part-2 of the interview! #southpole https://t.co/N99mreHUMx
Informative video from @JoeSpins with @sasharahlin documenting the daily walk between station and the SPT that we do at the #southpole#Antarctica! The winterovers do this walk daily, even when its -82 F air temp / -122 F windchill like in this video! https://t.co/BlQGDAhOEu
@SPTelescope This was a Basler flight that stopped only to refuel, transiting to McMurdo Station from Rothera (basically coast-to-coast). No direct contact with the flight crew (they fueled themselves), nor pax or supplies in or out, but it was awesome to see nonetheless!
Amazing picture of SPT winterover Matt Young in front of the telescope last week! The southern lights #Aurora were out again and the #MilkyWay can be seen above the telescope. Seems like he is having a great winter! #southpole#Antarctica
During the elevation gear greasing, winter over Josiah captured this cool picture of SPT! From shining a flashlight at the mirror, the reflective photogrammetry targets on the primary (used to measure the surface quality) light up pretty spectacularly! #southpole#astronomy
SPT is featured prominently in the @Netflix documentary https://t.co/brOnWpEZYs for its role in the @ehtelescope. I think this is the first time that a 15-arcsec pointing offset was sensationalized in a movie before. #southpole#Astronomy#Antarctica
