The Codex Gigas – The Largest Medieval Manuscript, Said to Be Written in One Night by a Monk… with Help from the Devil...😳

According to medieval tradition, a monk in a Benedictine monastery (likely in Podlažice, Bohemia — present-day Czech Republic) was sentenced to be walled up alive as punishment for breaking his monastic vows. Desperate to avoid this fate, he promised to create a book containing all human knowledge in a single night.

Realizing the impossible task, he made a pact with the Devil. Satan completed the book in exchange for the monk’s soul. In gratitude (or warning), the monk included a large portrait of the Devil on a dedicated page.

The story explains why the manuscript appears to be written in remarkably uniform handwriting throughout its 310 parchment leaves (620 pages) — as if completed in one marathon session.
