"Who says spreading your wings means flying high? Flying low is also flying," reads a line from Low Flight, a poetry collection by Wang Jibing.
The book has earned him the Lu Xun Literary Prize, one of China's top literary honors. But what makes the news particularly striking is that Wang is a food delivery rider.
Born in east China's Jiangsu Province, Wang, now 56, left school as a teenager due to his family financial hardship. He took on a variety of jobs – from construction work to running a street stall. He eventually chose to become a delivery rider, not only because it paid better, but also because it allowed him to observe passers-by and the scenery along the way, making it easier to capture inspiration for his writing.
He had been posting his poems and essays on social media over the past decade, but they failed to make much of a splash. Then came 2019, when a customer entered the wrong address, causing Wang to miss the delivery window. The customer sneered, "You're this old and still delivering food? How stupid can you be?"
After that frustrating experience, he wrote a piece titled "Man in a Hurry." It went viral online, and Wang soon became well-known. He began gathering material for his poetry, interviewing and surveying other delivery riders and drawing inspiration from their stories. In 2024, Low Flight was published. The collection vividly portrays this group of workers – though they are at the bottom of society, they still yearn for a better life.
Wang's achievement reflects a broader trend: more and more blue-collar workers in China are carving out a place for themselves in different areas. #TheFaces
