Cough Syrups and Child Deaths: What Every Parent Should Know
Recent reports have raised alarms about deaths in children who received cough syrups. Parents are understandably worried, but the facts are clear and knowing them can save lives.
What is the underlying cause of cough syrup-linked deaths?
Investigations show that many of these tragedies were due to contamination with toxic chemicals; mainly diethylene glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG). These substances, sometimes used in place of pharmaceutical-grade solvents, are poisonous. Even small amounts can damage the kidneys and lead to death, especially in children.
Do children need cough syrup at all?
The short answer is no.
▶️Most coughs in children are caused by viral infections that settle on their own in a week or so.
▶️Cough syrups do not cure or shorten these illnesses.
▶️Ingredients like antihistamines, decongestants, and codeine may cause side effects such as drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, or even breathing problems.
✅Safer options include warm fluids, honey (for children above 1 year), saline nasal drops, and rest.
How do these syrups cause death?
When contaminated with DEG/EG, syrups can cause: Nausea, vomiting, confusion; Kidney failure due to toxic metabolites; Severe metabolic acidosis, seizures, coma, and death.
How can such tragedies be prevented?
1. Stricter quality control of raw materials in pharmaceutical manufacturing
2. Avoiding unnecessary prescriptions of cough syrups for children
3. Educating parents not to demand syrups for every cough and cold
4. Government vigilance through routine testing and recalls of unsafe batches
What should parents and doctors remember?
1. Cough syrups are rarely needed for children. They don’t speed up recovery.
2. Beware of adulterated products; only use medicines from trusted, regulated sources.
3. If a child develops vomiting, confusion, or reduced urination after taking a syrup, seek urgent medical care. Kidney injury from toxin exposure can be life threatening but is treatable if diagnosed early.
Major cheat code in life: Speaking with conviction. The more you explain yourself, the more people think you have something to prove, something to hide, or you're unsure where you stand. Say it once. Say it clearly. Confidence is an awfully persuasive trait.
