R. Aharon Kotler, asked why God burdens rashei yeshiva with constant fundraising travel, offered an answer drawn from this week’s parasha: since the Talmud equates humiliation with death, a rebbe who inadvertently embarrasses a student has committed an accidental “killing,” and must be “exiled” like the inadvertent killer sent to a city of refuge. The comment may have been offered lightly, but it points to a coherent logic: just as exile teaches the killer the preciousness of life he had insufficiently valued, the teacher, uprooted from his position of status and made to ask others for support, recovers a sensitivity to those beneath him in the social structure. Modern research on status and perspective-taking bears this out. During the Three Weeks, as we mourn a destruction the Talmud traces to unchecked humiliation, the lesson carries particular resonance.
There’s a saying in politics: everyone’s your friend when the sun is shining.
Rep. Marty Moylan was our friend in the rain.
Yesterday we paid tribute to someone who has been with us through thick and thin, always placing principles over politics. Marty sticks up for the underdog, never hesitating to confront the bullies. He fearlessly sponsored a bill to extend Illinois’ scholarship tax credit program, fought antisemitism publicly when others hedged, and after October 7 personally drove around Illinois putting up “I Stand With Israel” signs. By himself. On his own dime.
@AgudathIsraelIL doesn’t forget our friends. And anyways, Marty is unforgettable!

The mayor says CPD responds faster since he disconnected ShotSpotter. There are problems with a study he cited:
• It didn't include shots fired calls ‼️
• It compared spring/summer response times to fall/winter
• CPD response time data is badly flawed

Yikes - defending a 4.2-minute response time claim from one un-peer-reviewed UChicago Justice Project analysis.
Six other studies say the opposite:
🔹 Piza (Northeastern, peer reviewed): ShotSpotter alerts beat 911 by 93 seconds
🔹 Cook (Duke): 1.2 min faster in Durham
🔹 Mares (SIUE): 1.5 vs 2.6 min in Winston-Salem
🔹 Lawrence (CNA, peer reviewed): 14–25% faster in Denver, 15% in Richmond
🔹 Goldenberg (Cooper Hospital, peer-reviewed clinical journal): 3.7 vs 5.4 min in Camden
🔹 Pittsburgh City Controller (Democratic, elected): 5 min faster than 911
This does not include Brookings corroborating the fact that 80-90% of criminal gunfire goes unreported nor the Univ of Chicago Crime Lab estimating that ShotSpotter directly contributes 85 GSW victims lives being saved per year.
The data proves we're doing what works: investing in communities, improving response times, and giving police officers tools that are effective. Not wasting taxpayer dollars for walkie talkies on poles that overpolice communities without improving safety. https://t.co/HY33pmjp03
RED BILL SUNDAY! Giving away a beautiful Chicago Cubs Red Bill for every run the Cubs score today.
Follow @obvious_shirts and quote tweet #TeamRedBill to enter! Winners picked tomorrow at noon! Go Cubs Go!
According to my calculations, if the Cubs continue their current “win 10 then lose 3” pattern, they’ll finish the regular season at 120-42, sweep the NLDS & NLCS, fall behind 3-0 in the World Series, and then win 4 straight to become World Series Champions!
