Singeetham Srinivasa Rao - One of the greatest filmmakers India has ever produced. Here’s a small tribute to the legend of the cinema.

Mayuri(1985) - Ever heard of a biopic in which the person on whom the film was based, plays the lead role in the film? There may be a few instances in the last three decades but in 1985, it was an unheard-of idea in Indian cinema. What is even more special about this film is that it won 14 Nandi Awards, the most by any Telugu film.

Pushpaka Vimana(1987) - A two-hour and thirty-one-minute film with no dialogues. Most of the filmmakers, may even be scared to think of such an idea but he made a very engaging film without a single dialogue. No wonder, even today, people consider it a masterpiece.

Apoorva Sagodharargal(1989) - Imagine a film in which the 5′ 5″ tall lead actor, playing a dwarf character. It may be easy given the technology available in this generation but how did he even dare to imagine such a role and how did he pull it off in 1989? Even today, filmmakers across industries wonder about the technique he used to make Kamal Haasan, appear like a dwarf.

Aditya 369(1991) - Hands down, this is his best work and it will be forever treated as a classic. A socio-fantasy film with science fiction elements, starring a mass hero like Nandamuri Balakrishna? Did any other director dare to attempt such a film? But, he dared to give us a classic. Even today, the film feels very novel and it will be patronised as one of the greatest films ever made in Indian cinema.

Bhairava Dweepam(1994) - You may have read about Lilliputs in the book, Gulliver's Travels, right? Imagine filming a song in 1994 in which the normal human beings are shown as Lilliputs and it looked so believable. Only he can do that. No one else can. And, again, only he can convince a star hero with immense mass following, to play a ‘Kurupi’ role for some time in the film.

Now, at the age of 94, he’s coming up with Sing-Geetham, a musical film in which the characters converse through songs but not through dialogues. We are seated at a nearby theatre this Friday, to witness the magic of the versatile filmmaker yet again on the big screen.
