Man, and here I thought I wrote C# apps on macOS. I was pretty sure they read/write to firestore. I was almost certain they run in Linux containers on Google cloud.

@matias_kaplan Domain names are largely to provide human readable addresses, but the translations up and down the network stack would still be required to make room for complementary application layer protocols such as HTTP, SSH, LDAP, SMTP, MQTT, etc. which are all built on top of TCP/IP.

@matias_kaplan The simple answer is that networking is a complicated hodgepodge of various protocols that were built on top of each other at different times and are maintained by different organizations. They all fit into the 7 layers of the OSI model.
