I'm as big an advocate for patience in football as you'll find.

The trouble with that for Sheffield United is that, if they were to make something of their season in terms of anything anywhere near the top six, under this coach, it felt like tonight had to be the start of something.

The additions at the end of the window, the fortnight to get their ducks in a row, re-organise, reset and regroup... it had to count.

A battling display and a draw, or even a narrow defeat but a competitive performance with chances: there had to be something to grab onto, ahead of Charlton at home.

For them to start with five defeats in five having been utterly humiliated tonight, I think it's difficult for a head coach to come back from that, certainly in terms of saving this season.

Do I think Selles is an excellent coach, who could take the club forward in the right circumstances? Yes, I do.

You don't go from amateur club and university youth coaching to Sheffield United manager, with no playing reputation at all to speak of, if you're not a fantastic coach - 5 games doesn't change my belief in him in that regard.

So, if he had a squad perfectly designed for what he wanted to do, I still think he'd be successful.

That said, I don't believe it's realistic to expect a fanbase to simply wait until the coach has the right circumstances.

Before then, they need to see something, some signs of progress, and while this squad is imbalanced and imperfect, it's capable of far better.

So, yes, we can talk about how early it is in the season, and the need for patience, but the Blades are already 8 points off the top 6, probably 10 by tomorrow evening, and with no signs of being ready to close that gap.
