I am broken. I’m still a mess. And, my children are still alive. That’s not something that parents of 19 children in Texas can say today. I literally cannot fathom what those parents are feeling.

My daughter responded, without missing a beat: “Don’t worry, I won’t get shot.”

As soon as the door shut, I lost it.

How and why should that ever be a response that a child (let alone a 3rd grader) gives to the cautionary statement of “be safe.”

I rarely drop my kids off at school - work gets in the way too often. Today, it worked out for me to drop off of my 3rd and 5th graders. I pulled up to the roundabout, they opened their doors, I instinctually said: “be safe.” (I’ve never said that to them at school drop off.) 4/7

Yesterday’s devastating massacre of children in Uvalde, Texas hit me this morning. Before we left the house, my wife and I asked the kids about what they would do at school if there was an active shooter.

My oldest (7th grader) said that they practiced once and it was good because it was during PE in the locker room so there are no windows to worry about.

It is so maddening and so sad that these are the conversations we must now have with our kids.

That was not all.

Our youngest (3rd grader) quickly rattled off their school drill, which included hiding “in the best place you can find,” not moving and staying away from the door and windows. She said it was “fun.” The innocence and purity was so clear.
