Narendra Modi may well go down in history as the only leader who spent thousands of crores of taxpayers' money travelling the world to collect awards and honours.

By contrast, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's contributions to anti-imperialism, democracy, and the Non-Aligned Movement were so significant that his legacy continues to be honoured decades after his passing.

The very award that Modi supporters are celebrating today had already been conferred upon Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru posthumously in 1995.

It was also conferred upon Biju Patnaik in recognition of his vital contributions to Indonesia's freedom struggle — interestingly, for tangible actions, not through desperate lobbying.

Most importantly, leader's legacy is not measured by the number of awards collected on foreign soil. It is measured by how they governed -- with justice, prudence, and a commitment to democratic values.

By that standard, Modi scores a big fat zero.

सोचिए जिसके शेर लाखों लोगों की ज़ुबान पर रहते हैं, उन्हें ऐसी गुमनाम सी विदाई दे दी गई।
सोचिए, भोपाल साहित्य और संस्कृति का गढ़ माना जाता है। पता नहीं कितने, लेखक, कवि, शायर, पत्रकार, कलाकार भोपाल में हैं, मगर उनमें से कितनों को लगा कि इस मौक़े पर उन्हें वहाँ होना चाहिए था और कितने पहुँचे?
ये भी सोचिए कि भोपाल मध्यप्रदेश की राजधानी है। विभिन्न राजनीतिक दलों के तमाम लोग वहाँ रहते हैं। मान लेते हैं कि बीजेपी को मुसलमानों से एलर्जी है, नफ़रत है और वह उनके नायकों को भी पसंद नहीं करती, मगर बाक़ी दल क्या कहेंगे?
दरअसल, बशीर साहब पिछले कई सालों से डिमेंशिया से पीड़ित थे। इस वज़ह से भी वे अलगाव का शिकार हो गए थे। लोगों ने आना-जाना लगभग बंद कर दिया था, मगर ऐसा भी नहीं था कि वे हम सबकी स्मृतियों में भी नहीं थे। वे थे, मगर वे किसी के काम के नहीं रह गए थे, इसलिए लोगों को लगा कि अब क्या फ़ायदा।
यानी बशीर सही कहते थे- ये मतलबों के सलाम थे......

तुम एक घटिया पत्रकार ही नहीं घटिया इंसान भी हो। जानता तो पहले से था, आज ये कहने को इसलिए मजबूर हुआ हूं क्योंकि तुमने मेरे साथ फिर एक घटियापन किया है। दूरदर्शन के प्रोग्राम में ‘समोसे जलेबी’ वाली स्टोरी का ज़िक्र कर तुमने मुझ पर निशाना साधा है। और ये तुमने पहली बार नहीं किया है। पहली बार तो तुमने तब किया था जब तुम ज़ी न्यूज़ में थे और तुमने प्रधानमंत्री मोदी का एक लल्लो चप्पो वाला इंटरव्यू किया था। 2019 चुनाव से पहले। और फिर जब तुम्हारी जगहंसाई शुरु हुई तो फिर तुमने अपना चेहरा बचाने के लिए एक DNA कार्यक्रम पूरी तरह मुझे और राजदीप सरदेसाई को समर्पित कर बनाया था। तब मेरी रिपोर्ट की क्लिपिंग्स भी लगायी थी। ख़ैर। तुम्हारा चेहरा तब भी नहीं बचा था। अब तो तुम्हारे पास कोई चेहरा है ही नहीं। तुमने हमेशा सरकारों की गोद में बैठ कर ही पत्रकारिता की है। कांग्रेस कार्यकाल में भी तुम जैसे पत्रकार ही बहुत बड़े चापलूस थे। यहां पर एक प्रदेश की कांग्रेस सरकार का ज़िक्र करना बेमानी होगा जिसके बूते तुम तब पत्रकारिता में पले बढ़े।

क़रीब सवा मिनट के क्लिप से तुम्हारा चेहरा बचता है तो बचा लो, जनता के टैक्स के पैसे से 15 करोड़ का सरकारी पैकेज जस्टिफ़ाई कर रहे हो कर लो। और ऐसा करने के लिए ही तुमने इस क्लिप के नीचे लिखे ‘राजनीति के हल्के फुल्के पल’ को नज़रअंदाज़ किया। क्योंकि तुम संपादक नहीं चंपादक हो। अरे वो एक मोमेंट था फील्ड रिपोर्टिंग का जब राहुल गांधी यूपीए सरकार के दौरान कथित घोटाले से जुड़े सवालों का जवाब नहीं दे रहे थे। फिर मैंने यही पूछना शुरु किया। इसकी डिटेलिंग फिर कभी। यहां तुमको सफ़ाई के तौर पर नहीं दूंगा।

मैं जानता हूं कि तुम मुझसे सिर्फ़ इस बात का बदला ले रहे हो कि मैंने 2003 में एनडीटीवी में मेरी नौकरी लगने में तुम्हारी मदद नहीं कर पाया। 2002-03 में सहारा में तुम्हारे साथ मैंने चंद महीने काम किया था। तब तुम शेखी बघारा करते थे कि मैं तो एनडीटीवी जाने वाला हूं मेरी बात हो गई है। लेकिन तुम शेखी बघारते ही रहे लेकिन जा नहीं पाए। जब तुम्हें पता चला कि मेरी नौकरी वहां लग गई है तो पहले तो सहसा तुम्हें भरोसा नहीं हुआ... फिर तुमने कहा कि जब जा ही रहे हो तो मेरे लिए भी बात करना कि मामला कहां अटका है। मैंने कोशिश भी की और राजदीप सरदेसाई से अनुरोध भी किया था तुम्हारे लिए। लेकिन क्योंकि संस्थान में मैं ख़ुद नया था इसलिए तुम्हारे लिए ज़ोर नहीं डाल पाया था। तुम्हारी नौकरी वहां लगा नहीं पाया। आई एम सॉरी फॉर दैट। पर तुम अब कभी डीडी से निकाले जाओ तो एनडीटीवी जा सकते हो। अब माहौल तुम्हारे अनुरुप है वहां।

अंत में एक बात। ये तुम ही हो जिसका 100 करोड़ वाला वीडियो क्लिप आज भी इंटरनेट तैर रहा है। जिस भी तरह तुमने समझौता कर लिया हो लेकिन वो एक ऐसा बदनुमा दाग़ है जो कभी तुम्हारा पीछा नहीं छोड़ेगा। डीडी पर कभी उस क्लिप की बात भी करो। और हां। लाइव इंडिया में रहते हुए कैसे तुमने स्कूल टीचर को लेकर फर्ज़ी ख़बर चलायी वो भी पत्रकारिता जगत नहीं भूला है आज तक। जिनको नहीं पता वे गूगल का ग्रोक कर सकते हैं। दो बार जेल भी गए तुम। कोई तिहाड़ी शब्द का ज़िक्र करता है तो सभी समझ जाते हैं कि तुम्हारे बारे में कुछ कहा जाता है। और तुम हो कि समोसे जलेबी वाली स्टोरी का ज़िक्र कर महान बनने की कोशिश करते हो! बनो। और क्योंकि तुमने मेरी स्टोरी का ज़िक्र किया है, अगर क़ूवत है तो किसी दिन मुझे इसी डीडी के प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर बहस के लिए आमंत्रित करो। तुम्हारी और मेरी पत्रकारिता का अंतर तुम्हारे प्रोग्राम के ज़रिए ही पता चल जाएगा। उन दर्शकों को जिनको तुम एक तरफ़ा तरीक़े से गुमराह कर रहे हो। ये मेरा हक़ भी बनता है क्योंकि तुमने मेरी स्टोरी का ज़िक्र किया।

तुम्हारे जवाब का इंतज़ार रहेगा

When I ran two news channels, I would look at journalist-cum-power brokers in the news business, and write them off as aberrations.

In hindsight, I see this as an act of moral convenience, of quiet collaboration, because I too was effectively in power.

The journalist-as-mediator, fixing corporate deals, or arranging uneasy marriages of political opponents, was always a feature of news media. It has been such, since the late 1980s, at least.

To say that I was unaware of this happening, would be a cowardly lie.

The reason why I steered clear of social interactions with netas, babus, and seths was precisely because of the hazy recognition that senior journalists were often themselves major players in the systems of power.

Yet, the kowtowing journalist of today - the one who prostrates when asked to crawl - is a novel phenomenon, which was absent in my time.

This is probably because I worked in newsrooms in the time of coalition govts, when the executive was relatively weak: Even the most compromised journalist could, simultaneously, be a middleman and also a critic of the system.

That option has now disappeared.

The mainstream journalist today - if they can be called journalists at all - are nothing but subservient propagandists for the powerful.
