1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria.
2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae.
3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish.
The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists follow their curiosity. This is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!
My group will give a platform presentation and a flash talk / poster at #ASHG26. Both presentations are related to the genetic basis and molecular mechanisms of circulating fatty acids. Looking forward to meeting new and old friends very soon! @saurav317@GeneticsSociety
Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga.
Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source. In the early 2000s, he and Georg Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, an algal protein with unique properties, found on the surface of the cell. When it is illuminated by blue light, a channel opens through the protein. Charged ions then flow into the cell, creating an electrical impulse. They found that regardless of which cell they put the protein in, those cells became light sensitive.

Champions ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Phenomenal win for Team India in Ahmedabad. Absolutely no match for the explosive cricket played by us throughout the tournament. Brilliant character shown by the boys to keep fighting in tough situations and become world champions once again. Congratulations to all the players and all the members of the management for achieving this feat. Jai Hind 🇮🇳❤️
A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports.

So many people keep asking me about Continue. What is it? What are you up to? Here you go...
Continue started as a research effort two years ago, with the belief that if the human body is a system, it should also have its leverage points. The simple levers that, when adjusted, could fundamentally alter how we age and live.
Along with a team of initially skeptical researchers, we've been investigating a penny-drop insight about human aging. Something that's been hiding in plain sight for eternity. But more on that in a few weeks. We are at the tail-end of the research on this hypothesis, which if true, could fundamentally change our understanding of biology and aging.
But today isn't about that. It's bigger than that.
Today, we are expanding Continue Research to include a $25 million fund (entirely personally backed) to support researchers across the world who dare to ask simpler questions than anyone else. Who believe biology might be far simpler than we've made it.
For over a decade, I have believed that most of the world’s problems stem from our short human lifespans. Continue Research’s goal is to extend healthy human function long enough that humans stop making short-term decisions.

This will be a multi-decadal journey. Our goal here is to become a small catalyst in humanity's journey of conscious evolution. To lead us into the Post-Darwin era.
Researchers, please look us up and apply for funding/grants at – https://t.co/3bbtOyXEPf

Congrats to @xx_huifang and @YitangS for their tremendous efforts on this project to characterize the shared genetic basis between circulating fatty acids and brain disorders!
It is a major PhD project of @YitangS. I am very excited to see this work out. I learned so much about the genetics of circulating fatty acids. This is a solid foundation for more research to come regarding gene-diet interactions for omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Very excited to share our primer on LLM for biology @naturemethods! We discuss how to use:
⚡️human & protein LMs (eg #ESM)
⚡️#singlecell & #multimodel LMs
⚡️when to fine-tune, transfer learn etc.

Colab tutorial https://t.co/xsDcqWJPrp
Written for a broad audience. Great job @ElanaPearl@KyleWSwanson!
Excited to share our study on fish oil supplements modifying genetic effects on lipids, now published in @AJCNutrition: https://t.co/VsFbKu3XrT. Thanks to all co-authors!
