Do Catholics and Muslims Worship the Same God? A Catholic Perspective

In today’s age of interreligious dialogue, many ask: Do Catholics and Muslims worship the same God? While the question may seem simple, the answer—according to the authentic teachings of the Catholic Church—is deeply theological and nuanced.

Pope Benedict XVI, as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, addressed this issue directly in Dominus Iesus (2000), reaffirming that while there is recognition of certain truths about God in Islam, there is a radical difference in the understanding of who God truly is.

“The faith of the Church acknowledges the revelation of God as Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the heart of our belief.”
(Dominus Iesus, 10)

Islam rejects the divinity of Christ and the Trinity, which are non-negotiable foundations of the Christian faith. Though Muslims profess to worship one God (Allah), the God they profess is not the same God revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity. As Pope Benedict XVI said in his Regensburg Address (2006), when reason is divorced from faith—as in certain Islamic interpretations—violence can follow, because God is no longer bound by reason and love.

Cardinal Robert Sarah, a voice of clarity in modern Catholicism, also affirms the unique and unrepeatable revelation of God in Jesus Christ. In his writings and speeches, he warns against a false sense of religious relativism that places all faiths on the same level.

“There is only one God, and He has revealed Himself fully in Jesus Christ. No one can come to the Father except through Him.”

Thus, while we respect Muslims and acknowledge their sincere search for God, we must not blur the lines: the God of Jesus Christ—who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is not the same as the Allah of Islam.

Interreligious dialogue must be rooted in truth. True peace comes not from pretending differences don’t exist, but from proclaiming Christ with charity and conviction.
